Wow! I love this game! Any past revelations of such about The Sims or Black & White have now been revoked.

This game is great! The graphics are, although not perfect, pay great attention to detail, and uses the same engine as RRT2 (Railroad Tycoon 2, made by the same company, PopTop).

Basically, you are president (or El Presidente, as the game addresses you) of a Caribbean island. This game is basically SimCity, with political elements involved.

You keep the people happy, by providing housing, and entertainment. For these, you need electricity and money. The electricity, of course, you buy with money, as well as everything else.

To earn money, you need to make money off exporting goods, or attracting tourist with fat wallets, filled with Yanqui dollars.

Your main source of income at the start of the game is farming, and lucrative goods, such as tobacco, pineapple, coffee, and others. As you become richer, you can set up factories, where you can, say... produce cigars from the tobacco, which sell more than raw tobacco.

Then, there's tourism. You have to build hotels for people to stay in, and enough entertainment for them to refer their friends at home to come (you gain income from entrance fees from these attractions).

Then, there's help from either the USA, or Russia, whomever you choose. You can trade delegations, and if your relationship with one of them is good enough, they can send you buildings, take prices off buildings, or raise the prices in which you can export goods for.

Also, you don't CONTROL people. You have to attract them to jobs by raising wages, and keeping the wages proportionate to the minimum skill requirement.

That's all from me, this game is really deep, I haven't discovered it all.

    I really recommend it.

Personally, I think it's that iron fist that is scaring people away. Try putting it into a silk glove and see if anyone responds.

I bought it and am playing it while I sit here waiting for my cable modem service to kick in sometime tomorrow (I'm at work right now). It was ok. I didn't think it was as great as everyone else seemed to think. It's a lot like Sim City or other empire/city building games. I've played it for about 3 or 4 hours and have already gotten bored with it. I dunno, maybe when I get back home, I'll fire it up again and see it is any more interesting, hehe. There's only one game I'm waiting for in the immediate future - Baldurs Gate II : Throne of Bhaal.

Maybe it's just because I am older than most of y'all, but how can anyone play a video game for 3-4 hours? I get about 15 minutes into a game before boredom and restlessness kick in and I have to get away from the thing. Aaaarrrgh! 3-4 hours? Who has that much time to kill? I haven't had that much spare time in 15 years!

Trust me, it's because you're an old fart. Well, that and you have a family.

I'm getting there, too. I remember when I first played Sim City, I played for about 8 or 9 hours straight. If I played it now, I doubt I'd go for more than 20-30 minutes. When I hit about 27 or 28 I started buying games, playing them for about 30 mins and saying "blah... boring". Somewhere along the line I said screw it and that I wasn't going to waste money on games unless I knew it was good. That combined with work has really reduced the amount of time I get to play. The only thing I'll dedicate that much time to now (hopefully) is something like Baldur's Gate: Throne of Bhaal! Woo hoo!

Holy crap, I made someone's signature! I've arrived!

As for the family part, one of my sons is the video game champion. He is always wanting me to join him, so I try. I really do try, but something about getting my ass kicked by a 12 yr old makes the fun drain right out of the game. Of all the dozens of games we have played together, I've only beat him at one: Mario Golf.

Isn't golf a game men take up as they get older? Hmmm...maybe I am an old fart!

It sounds like a primitive game I was playing in 1993/4 whose name I forget. In that game, you're the president/dictator of a Carribean country and your mission is simnply to stay in power for 10 years. You have to deal with the economy and foreign relations and other things. You get taken down by coups, revolutions, Americans (if you trade with USSR), and Soviets (if you trade with Americans).

Cool game. It was where I got my moniker from. It was written by a PhD student who was trying to demonstrate how difficult it is to have a stable government in the Carib.

Dr of Dunk: this weekend, I restarted by BG2 campaign since Throne of Bhaal is finally out. I never got around to beating it last time, and I figure I really should before I buy the expansion pack [IMG].

Behad: Last time I got a good empire builder, I played from 10pm -5am by accident [IMG]. Guess I'm a geek!

I didn't get tropico because it sounded too much like SimCity. No competition, just build build build... didn't like rollercoaster tycoon for that reason, too... though most people seemed to go ape over it.
