In a prior thread, I remember you saying something like: "I should be able to have a wild, natural garden with flowering weeds without people saying for me to cut it..." or something to that effect. I have to admit I didn't think too much of it till I was driving in a subdivision recently (I couldn't find the place again to save my life.) and I saw the most spectacular wild, garden arrangement taking up nearly the entire front yard. The owners kept the landscape meticulously arranged. An old style log fence served as a border around the garden and they had these stones arranged in a unique pattern around the perimeter. The house looked like those Jim Walter type homes with a porch, but seemed well maintained...O the garden was colorful and mixed with different flowers and there obviously were flowering weeds! In the middle, a small circular pond with lilies and a cool fountain made for a sight. I never thoght an old fashioned weed garden could look so cool! Which begs the question. I know these people buttered up there ole, natual weed garde with adornments and additions but is it simply an issue of not mowing? ------------------ Rarely is the question asked: Guns kill squirrels than REDRUM to fools across the nation?
My wife knows more, but ours was landscaped with native Texas plants, then we just let it grow from there spreading out where it wanted and dying off where it needed. IMO, it is much more beautiful than a neatly manicured lawn and much more beneficial for wildlife. Because of all the plants, our air quality in the back yard is MUCH better than the surrounding air. The plants soak up much of the toxins. NASA actually studied that phenomenon and there is a book out on it. Our yard has been certified a Texas and National backyard wildlife habitat for its large number of native plants and sustainibility of animal and insect populations. AND, I don't have to mow!!! ------------------ Things do not change; we change. - Henry David Thoreau
By the way, it is also MUCH softer on our water bill because native plants require VERY little watering. That's why they call them "native." ------------------ Things do not change; we change. - Henry David Thoreau
