Zac the apt we have (I'm told) is a ten minute walk to the Champs Elysees so that won't be a problem. BTW what's wrong with ending up in the sex district? x110thst when in June are you going? We'll be there June 15th - 24th. ------------------ Everything you do, effects everything that is.
well i really dunno. I have $600 in travel vouchers from Continental(due to the worst travel season in airport history- Got bumped from my flight from LaGuardia to Houston- missed the Lakers at Compaq Center oh i was pissed, i told them I was missing a Rockets game, they didnt care. Of course Destiny's Child also got bumped from the same flight but managed to make it on the plane.hmmmmmmmmmmmmm Anyway they put me in a cab to Newark and gave me this voucher to travel anywhere Continental flies.) So i was thinking of getting a ticket to Europe and paying the difference. I am in a class with a Parisian girl who is studying here in ny. She will in france all summer. how much were your tickets if you don't mind me asking mcmark? flying out of Newark or New York? whats your thoughts on travelling lately? ------------------ right on
The Tickets were round trip for $446 a piece through TWA. We fly out of JFK and land in DeGaul (sp?). Its a straight shot with no stops or layovers. We were told this was a good deal. "whats your thoughts on travelling lately?" Haven't really thought about it! Why? ------------------ Everything you do, effects everything that is. Talked with a friend of mine at lunch today and told him about your upcoming trip, mcmark. He told me about barge trips in western France. Don't know if you are headed that way or not but it sounds like fun. I think it is a fairly new way to see France. Anybody? ------------------ Time is a great teacher-- only problem is it kills all its pupils. PowerbizOnline.com
Hey Rich thanks! Actually since its our first trip to Paris we'll probably just groove on the city. But I've been reading about some great site seeing boat trips on the Seine. So that sounds pretty cool! ------------------ Everything you do, effects everything that is. [This message has been edited by mc mark (edited April 26, 2001).]
great i must have gotten ripped off because I bought a ticket to amsterdam in late june returning in july for 830 dollars round trip from houston... ohh well..i am going down to pamplona for the real party-san fermines aka--running of the bulls!!! by the way I have never been that impressed with nice..its--okay aix au provance or avignon or montpellier is nicer to me although cannes is not that bad... ------------------ "no matter how good she looks someone... somewhere..is tired of her sh*t"
Sir its all in the timing and when you want to travel. We looked a few sites and did some pricing on our own! We're returning on a Saturday, but when we looked at the same flight on Sunday it was $400 dollars more. $846!!! No kidding You're gonna have a blast in pamplona!!! Our family lived in Madrid in the seventies and our parents took us to see the running of the bulls! It was wild! Although I was only 8 so I've probably forgotten more than I remember. But it sure did leave an impression! ------------------ Everything you do, effects everything that is. [This message has been edited by mc mark (edited April 26, 2001).]
My damn phone has been out for the last two days...thus, no response. Aparently, in order to set up dsl, they have to break your phone line. Anyway, a few notes: 1. Definitely travel by Metro...get a 1 week pass...no special "package" deal or anything, just a coupon for 1 week. If you are there long enough, this is the best. Don't look around at people on the etor or make eye contact, it is considered rude and will also mark you as a novice, lending you vulnerable to crazy people and thieves. When getting the coupon, ask for the map, that way you can plan out your route...don't worry, even natives use them (they are tiny) because the Metro is too complex otherwise. 2. Don't be loud and obnoxious. All of those horror stories you hear about hating americans, etc are just because of ugly americans. Approach correctly and they will be your new friend. Always be polit: bonjour..au revoir, etc.... 3. "shay pa" (phonetically -- actually "che pas") means je ne sais pas -- i dont know. No one uses it full. Just a quick dunno, really. Don't be too confused when you hear it. Also: "shwee" can be "je suis" "weigh" is closes to what oui sounds like, etc... 4. Latin Quarter can be a giant cluster on many days...I hated a lot of it. 5. Catacombs are a scam! 6. Jardin du Luxembourg is a wonderful public park, highly reccommended. 7. You must go to the Marais. It is the jewish/mid eastern section. There is a fallafel place (can't remember street and don't know where my map is) that is close to the Metro stop (you go north, then take a left on a street with a lot of shops/restaurants, it will be on the north side...has pictures of Lenny Kravitz all over (his favorite place)...Go there! Best fallafel ever...get it with the hot sauce. Around the corner from that is Place de Vosges (sp?) a wonderful 17th century planned parck and apartment courtyard...victor hugo lived there Also in the Marais are many good galleries - all free and the Musee Picasso and Musee Mailloll...both wonderful. 8. Go to the Centre Pompidou...it is worth it for the building, nearby fountains, and people watching in addition to exhibitions they routinely show. 9. Try to get into the Comedie Francaise, near the Louvre...being an actor it would be up your alley. 10. Musee Rodin is very nice. 11. Don't plan on buying anything around the Champs Elysees...rip off. 12. get a phone book, look up "Torn and Tattered Pages...it is an english bookshop that has great in english used books and serves lunch and brunch (on sunday thay have brioche french toast...oh my!). Fun little excursion and will not hurt your head because they are either british or english...they could also give you more pointers... 13. Don't get stuck around Gare du Nord. 14. Versaille is lame. Unfortunately, Veux-le-Vicompte is slighly farther away but is far superior (just not as big and gaudy) it is what made loius want a versaille. 15.grand palais and petite palais often have good things. 16. of course the louvre and musee d'orsay. I went to the louvre maybe 20 times and did not see everything...be warned. 17. Saint Chapelle on ile de la cite, of course. 18.Try to go to as many small restaurants as possible...the ones run by familes and are much better/friendlier. If you are around a tourist attraction, do not eat...the food is worse, they can be mean, and the prices are rediculous. Paris is actually cheap if you do it right. 19. Visit as many pannini and crepe stands as possible...don't look for big restaruants, just little small shops where the front of the building has a counter and you order from the street -- the best! 20. take plenty of contact stuff, doedorant, etc for toilettries...they are expensive in paris. 21. Pigalle is a tourist trap, nothing but van loads of Germans. Unless you go for kitsche value, don't bother. 22. Walk a lot, dont take bus or boat tours. just explore by foot. You cannot imagine the things you will run into. You cannot get lost because the metro is everywhere - always linking you back to known areas. 23. Do not ever rush...order 1 coffee...sit for 3 hours and enjoy..no one cares, it is expected. Life is different for the French. God, there is too much..all I can think of for now... ------------------ Whitey will pay.

I was in Paris for business about 4 weeks ago - I would have to echo 111chase111, except for:- a) The only French I spoke was "Merci". I got by fine. Almost everyone speaks English. b) While the Louvre is a must see, I enjoyed Muse D'Orsay more. The Mona Lisa was "underwhelming" to say the least. c) Definitely climb the Eiffel Tower, but the two other views I though were spectacular were from the top of the Arc de Triomphe, and from Sacre Cour. Be careful around Sacre Cour at night though. I witnessed an armed robbery nearby, (it was at night though) d)I didn't get time to do the Catacombs, but next time I will. e) The Metro is the ONLY way to travel. Fast, clean, safe. f) While Paris is nice, the South of France is spectacular. Nice, Antibes, Cannes, Monte Carlo. I once rented a scooter and rode it from Cannes to Monte Carlo (and yes, I did roar around the F1 circuit on my 50cc scooter ) and the coastal scenery, and villages etc along the way are just incredible. I guess you are only there for a week, so it might be better to stick closer to Paris, but if you can extend.... ------------------ ..as a man danced so the drums were beaten for him. I knew you wouldn't let me down Rimmy! Anything else? Its kind of funny, all this talk about not making eye contact, keeping an eye out about your surroundings and such. I've had some good training for this living in New York! ------------------ Everything you do, effects everything that is.
Yeah, Mark...I forgot about that...it is essentially the same -- big city living, not infringing on personal space, etc... I am trying to remember more, but it has been almost 5 years now... ------------------ Whitey will pay.
