Bill White and the Harris County Sports Authority need to get some balls and tell the MLB that this isn't even their decision to make.

The noise may not make that much of a difference in baseball, but I know that superstitions do. If the Astros believe that having the roof closed helps them then opening it will be a disadvantage for us.

Someone should ask Bud Selig what competitive baseball advantage is there to the Astros by keeping the roof closed.

Morgan Ensberg wrote in the chronicle diary thign he does that he and the rest of the guys want it closed. It is obviously already in the players heads. That roof had beter be shut.

Not to mention I want to wear shorts!

The roof will be closed anyway because it's going to be too cold. The high today is 73 with a low in the 40s. No way they keep that roof open when it's 50 something degrees outside during game time.

Is there a temperature that triggers the decision?

I heard someone call 790am this morning from Houston that said there is a 60-80 degree limit they use to determine if they keep it opened or closed. I don't know if he knew for sure or if he was just talking out of his ass.

You can say the park should be open..that's fine. You can question the Astros call to keep it closed..that's fine, too. I have no problem with that. I have a problem with it not being the Astros call to make.

Do they instruct on how the grass is to be cut, as well? There's an advantage for teams there (ask the Cubs). There are all sorts of things that teams use for home field advantage. And even if they don't work physically, they work mentally, in that they give the home team a sense of a home field advantage.

it's our freaking park. it's the home of the Houston Astros. the Houston Astros should be the ones calling the shots on the roof.

The ridiculous thing about that 60-80 window is that 80 in Houston (with all the humidity) is NOT the same as 80 in Chicago or NY so in a sense, 80 in Houston can be as uncomfortable as 50 in Chicago.

I can't believe this conversation is even taking place. I really think the Astros should put their foot down and close the damn roof. What are they gonna do? Kick us out of the league?

I think everyone needs to chant "close the roof" tonight. The Astros want it closed and it should be the Astros call to make, not MLB or Fox.

That is the heart of this issue. Verbage like "it's our call to make" and "let's not let this be a farce" are total freaking BS. Two points:

    * It's *not* a farce, dumbass. You open the roof so the grass can grow; that way you can have your cake *and* eat it: play baseball inside on real grass. I'm sincerely sorry that the highest official in all of MLB is too stupid to see this.
    * It's *NOT* "your call". Why doesn't MLB simply ask Houston to open the lid? If they come in with the whole "it'll be great for Houston's exposure for the skyline to be on national TV, the blimp shots add a lot to our national television audience, the audience for this event is so much larger it'll really be the best thing" then I think we would gladly cooperate. But to come in and strongarm everything with this "it's our call" verbiage is complete and utter BS. Add to that the fact that the very good reasons I've listed are *not* being listed by that ingrate Butt Selig. All he's saying is, "it's our call, we don't want this to be a farce." Dumbass.

If you are going to the game start a chant and keep it going til the roof is closed. If the majority of the stadium starts chanting I doubt it will take very long for them to start closing the roof.
