why is it silly? it should be the team's decision. just like how the grass is cut...how the a/c blows in the Metrodome...and on and on. it's part of baseball...part of the uniqueness of home field advantage in baseball. and if the team who plays in the park wants the roof closed...then it should be. whether you or i or bud selig or frank sinatra thinks otherwise. because it's not our decision.
It's silly because just like in the NLCS when they closed the roof to increase the noise -- they took away one of the best parts of baseball - playing outdoors under a beautiful sky. The weather isn't nice that often in Houston ~ we should enjoy every second. If the roof had been open Pujols would have been to enamored with the Houston skyline to hit a home run and would have struck out. Advantage Astros
WHO CARES??? The Astros will sweep at home anyway, roof open or closed. And just a sidenote, why wouldn't y'all want the roof open? Sure, there's a lot of noise INSIDE when it's closed, but with the roof open, it'll just be louder: ALL of Houston will be cheering!
what is the point of having a roof that opens though? if noise gives us an advantage.. we might as well keep it closed every game of the year.. no need to ever open it.. if noise gives us an advantage.. don't we want that advantage in the late innings of games in July too?
They did a study about those Metrodome fans and it turns out they had no affect on the ball. I can tell you from personal experience though the Metrodome has one huge advantage in that it is one of the most depressing and drabbest places to watch a baseball game. As for keeping the roof open I think there is a big aesthetic argument for it. I've only been to MMP, it was still Enron then, once and they had the roof open and it was a sunny day with temps only in the low 80's and it was great. Few things are better than watching baseball on a sunny day or mild night.
Noise makes no difference in baseball anyway. There are no cadences like football. There are no in play communications like basketball. Baseball, except for outfielders calling eachother off, could be played with all deaf people. BTW - All that damn noise didn't help Lidge when Pujols jacked that homer....noise makes NO difference....except maybe pump a player up. I say...open the roof and enjot this beautiful weather....make the damn Sox jealous off how nice we have it here rather that crap they have in Chi-town!!
Here's a little dig at Houston's baseball fans from the Sun-Times: While some contend that the Astros want a noisy park and close the roof for that reason, anyone who has been to Astros games in the playoffs knows that while it's been enthusiastic, it's far from an overwhelming and deafening atmosphere. Texas is a football state, first and foremost. I guess he hasn't been to a recent Texans game. It's also obvious he hasn't been to an Astros playoff game. http://www.suntimes.com/output/worldseries/cst-spt-strosnt24.html
figures the Suntimes would write crap like that. The playoff games I went to this year were the loudest and most crazy (energy) things I've ever been to.
I don't think it should be MLB's decision, but oh well. We are going to spank them roof open or closed. RED ASS ROY will not be denied!!
Good to know Selig has time to worry about things like this while all his players are roiding up. The Astros need to get back at him by moving the game to the Dome. That would be sweet.
Whether or not the roof is open or closed should be up to the Astros and not MLB....MLB did not build the stadium. Harris County and the City of Houston did. Other than that...if MLB wants the roof open...keep it open at the start of the game...but close it around the 5th or 6th inning...say if the temperature drops below 60.............
i agree. the fans scream whether it's the opponent or an astro at the plate. if lidge is out there for a save, we scream. when we're down a run in the ninth, we scream. how does noise become a factor? having said that, Bud Selig is still an ass.
Because the incredible volume adds to the experience, both for the players and for the fans (and for the viewing and listening audience). What do you often say after a great game? "Man, that place was crazy! The sound in there was deafening!" And, while it can't be measured and certainly may not help a player's performance, that noise *does* influence adrenaline and a player's sense of the support he is receiving. The BUS's lid adds to the awesome experience that is playoff baseball. People don't come to baseball games to stargaze or to look at pretty skylines, they come to watch baseball. And, I concur with the poster above concerning Bud Sellout.
Close the damn roof. This is a joke. This is not a bust on Drayton but do you think Steinbrenner would close the roof if the players, coaches and fans wanted it open? Hell no. I think the Astros should say to MLB..."we appreciate your opinion but guess what, its my house and the roof stays shut". Let them fine us 100K per game. That's about 30 minutes worth of beer sales per game. SHUT THE DAMN ROOF!!!!!
