I was really happy for Bagwell in game 2 of the WS, getting a leadoff hit against the BIG GUY that wiffed him in game 1. Everyone was all high on Mr. BIG GUY, bla bla. Bags and Burke scored the tying runs, but too bad we didn't pull out the win. Bags hit the ball hard in other at-bats, but right at fielders. Anyway, it must have been a month ago, but SR610 mentioned that Bagwell was, or is thinking about having shoulder replacement surgery after the season. Does anyone know what the heck that entails, and can it really help Jeff? I've heard from TV broadcasters in the playoffs, that Bagwell still isn't even allowed by doctors to throw the ball, but he can swing the bat-he's still recovering from the surgery. Perhaps he'll be able to throw the ball better with this first surgery...??? Frankly, I still believe we can sweep the Sox at home, and take a win in Chicago for the title. It'd be all too appropriate for Bagwell to bring us the win(s) in Chicago. He deserves it. Comments?
If he has shoulder replacement surgery, his career is done. It's a distinct possiblity, which is why it's been talked about. But he's gonna do everything he can to try and rehab that shoulder and come back next spring able to contribute. If he can't, then it's on to retirement and the surgery.
No matter what, Bags will have to have replacement surgery. That is the only way for him to live out his life without the agonizing pain he's lived with for the last few years. The replacement surgery is about quality of life, not playing baseball. I have to imagine that the outcome of the World Series greatly affects his decision for next season. If the Astros come back and win this thing, I'd have to think that he will retire (along with Clemens). That would solidify his place in Cooperstown. The only regret that I see is that he and Biggio won't be able to go out together. Could you imagine that scene 5 years from now?
Bags doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who would squander his money. I'm guessing if he retires after this season he will still be pretty well off for the rest of his life and I'm sure if he wants the Stros will offer him an office or coaching job. Also if he's a guy really concerned about money why did he offer to pay his own way to travel with the team this season..
Whether or not he retires, I still see Drayton honoring that last year on the contract. Bagwell was underpaid for so many years to stay with the team at that "Hometown Discount" rate, and I have no problem with that. But, I still see Bagwell trying anything he can do to play next season, regardless of the outcome of the World Series. Time will only tell.
That's what I was thinking. From what I've heard is if Bagwell has to retire because of his injury then Drayton will receive the money to pay all of Bagwell's last year from insurance. If that's the case then it would be in everyone's best interest for Jeff to retire if he can't play at a certain level.
