The Joker clearly says that they call him Maurice because he speaks of the pompatus of love. If they call him Maurice for another reason, that is not evident in the song and cannot be used to say that the line itself makes sense. Either people call him Maurice because he speaks of the pompatus of love (something that doesn't exist and doesn't make sense on its face), or they call him Maurice because of some other song he wrote which is not evident in the line itself (making the reason mentioned in the song a lie). But I see what you're saying, and I don't want to argue about it anymore. I will maintain the lyric doesn't make any sense. You can disagree. And, for the record, I liked Abracadabra when it came out, but I was just a little kid then (I like The Joker, too.
