October 21, 2005 - For the love of Terry Puhl and J.R. Richard, can the Astros get a little love? The team just battled back from one of the most painful losses in recent sports history as Albert Pujols hit a laser so hard, I'm surprised it didn't go through the wall. But as the baseball purists like to say: "Momentum is only as good as your next days starting pitcher." And while the White Sox rested, the Astros sucked it up and silenced St. Louis with a pitching performance so brilliant, it erased all memories of Kevin Bass…all memories of Nolan Ryan's blown lead…all memories of Albert Pujols.

"I think over the last couple of days once we caught that fly ball in St. Louis, I've just reflected on everything that's happened a little bit and just to see the expressions on the guys' faces that have been here, I'm most happy for them. I'm thankful that it's happened for them so they get the experiences because not every great player gets the opportunity to do this," Roger Clemens said during Friday's workout. "Not every player that's just had an average career or just a -- a fairly average career, they don't get to experience this type of excitement and this type of fine alternative to the situation, where everything is magnified. And again, we're in Chicago where the air is a little crisper, the sights are louder, clearer. I'll be very interested when everything is said and done to hear the comments from the guys that have not been here before. I've had, over the last 24 hours, had several of the guys really asking a lot of questions and trying to answer it the best way I can for them. But I enjoy hearing their stories, just like all of you, when you all get inside a little bit beyond the game and hear the neat little things going on with players that have never experienced this before."

But the question remains, do the Astros have what it takes to beat the White Sox? A team that pitched four straight complete games against the Angels and shutdown Vlad like he was swinging a toothpick. The Astros will also have to deal with "Mr. Clutch" Joe Crede and AJ Pierzynski's knack for turning the controversial into curtains for his opponents.

One thing to look out for throughout the games…how the Yankees spent all that money on pitching this year, and it's a group of ex-Yankees pitching in the World Series. Funny how that all worked out.

"Me and Roger Clemens had a very good relationship (when in New York) and he taught me a lot of things. He taught me a couple of things, a couple of pitches," says Sox Game 1 starter Jose Contreras. "We pitch mostly the same way, and just facing him tomorrow is an honor, just as good as he is. I wish I had him on my team, but too bad we have to face him."

I wonder if Roger regrets teaching Contreras those pitches right about now.

Anyway. since this World Series, on paper at least, looks too tough to call, I consulted the predicting powers of MLB 2K5 World Series Edition.

After simulating the games, the series doesn't seem so close after all.

The Astros win the World Series in just five games, with Jason Lane slamming 2 home runs, Morgan Ensberg blasting 3, and Craig Biggio coming through in his first World Series appearance, hitting .306 and scoring 5 runs. Clemens gets 2 wins, Lidge saves 4, while Crede struggles, only knocking in 2 runs the entire series. Contreras and Garcia both get rocked in their starts, and Buehrle is the only White Sox pitcher to find success against the Astros lineup.
