I haven't been there in a couple of years, but when I was younger and visited my grandparents, we used to always go to "Felix's" in Houston. Loved that place... more authentic than most.

Oh, one other... this little place in New Hampshire (!) called Luis' like that. It was very pricey for what you get... but it was absolutely delicious! Probably the best Enchiladas I've ever had anywhere.

$ Something on Washington, a taco house place. Don't know the name, near TC Jester. They have taco fajita's on a bing grill, buffet style ordering.

$$ El Paraiso (Fairview) start with a bowl of freshly made chips, best homemade salsa available (imso), and 5 types of street-style Mexican enchilidas (pretty damn authentic) and don't pass up ordering their Carne Asada (fajita) some day.

$$$ $10-20 I still prefer El Paraiso for anything under $20, as I am still going to order enchilidas.

$$$$ $15-$80 this price range gets us into the gourmet American/Mex stuff. I have to go with Sierra Grill on Montrose. Every bit as good as Rick Bayless's Chicago restaurants.

OH MAN!!!!!!! Felix's was the best ever. I still to this date cannot find a better queso than they had. Many changes after Felix's death. I too ate there when visiting my grandparents. The same old timer would wait on us, and I would get an Orange Crush in a bottle along with my Cheese Enchiladas. Did you ever get to sit up on that upper level? Always wanted to, but we never got too. After the ownership changed, so did the quality, I think. I dunno, is it still open, I haven't been in about 10 years. But Felix will always and forever be the home of the best that I have ever had, and the Queso, while I have duplicated (thanks to Ms. Felix for the recipe), will never be matched at by any other. Aaaahhhhh I can taste it now!

It's been awhile since I've been there, but there is a place on Clinton Drive in Galena Park called Potosino's. I've eaten at a ton of Tex-Mex places in my day, but the best, BY FAR, was Potosino's. Their salsa will leave you wanting more and more. It's a very small place and hard to get a table at lunchtime, but DAYAM, I want some now!

Yeah, the brand new ones just south of Riverside.

Yes, I had my enchiladas suizas at La Feria today for a cool $6, tea and tip included.

    Here's another one...

Leo's, on Washington, near downtown. The place has been there forever, and the food is really good, if you are looking for a lot of food for a reasonable price. (btwn $8-10) It's also considered ZZ Top's favorite Tex-Mex place.

Also, as far as Mex-Mex, I love Pico's on Bellaire Blvd, and ANY taqueria!

And how about the new wave of fish taco's? My favorite's are for grilled, go to Cabo's (best habanero sauce, ever imo), and for fried fish taco's, try Berryhil Tamales, on Westheimer and Revere. Honestly, I haven't had anything bad there, yet. The Queso is made with a white cheese, and is outstanding!

And now I'm hungry. Poopy on you. [IMG]

I really, really like the Cowboy Ranch (steakhouse/Tex-Mex) down in Deer Park/Pasadena. It's definitely a different place... I think they're in the Guiness Book of World Records for being the restaurant with the most signs or something. (they all kinds of crap there for like no reason, but it's pretty cool...)

    My favorite in Houston:

El Pueblito on Richmond just East of Mandell. Delicious pineapple salsa, delicious red snapper, delicious migas.

I tired Tila's on Shephard yesterday. Don't know if you'd consider it Tex-Mex vs. authentic Mex, but it was pretty tasty. They had a pretty good 3 shots of tequila for either 7.95 or 9.95, depending on the shots you choose. In the end, though, I still prefer Ninfa's. The one across from Little Pappasito's on Kirby is pretty good, except the waiters are strange as it is VERY hard to tell whether they are male or female (I apologize if Im offending a fellow BBSer who is also on the waitstaff at that Ninfa [IMG])

    My La Jaliscience story....

used to go there all the time as a freshman at UH, because they wouldn't card us (or call 911 on us), we went through many a pitcher of Margarita there.......until while pouring one pitcher a roach came floating out of it. Got up and walked directly out and have never returned.

Still turns my stomach to think of that place.

    A couple other Tex-Mex places:

Jalepeno's on Kirby, they have great spinach and seafood enchiladas.
Blue Agave on W. Gray and Waugh, only been once but the chicken enchiladas were good and the black beans great.
Teala's on Dallas, atmosphere is better than the food, great beans there too and good patio.
Café Adobe, food isn’t great but the mini chimychangas(sp) with queso you an get at happy hour for 3.95 is one of the better deals in town
Big fan of the Chuychanga at Chuys, and just about everything I have had at El Tiempo.

If they moved, it's just to a new location. (I haven't been in a while) I like the bang for the buck, and honestly think it's better than any ninfa's other than the orig.

I also think Papasito's has damn good Mexican food, so maybe it is my tastes..(or lack thereof) I do smoke, afterall! [IMG]

Fat. It is my understanding they went out of bidness. I think my disdain for the place was inpart due to the TERRIBLE service, especially by that big fat tattooed guy.

I love papasitos as well! Love the Chips Y salsa there, and the Fajitas.
