I woke up this morning with a slightly sore throat. Usually with me, I get a slight sore throat a couple of days before I am bombarded with a severe cold/flu. This happens the same time every year and puts me out of commission for the better part of a week. Normally, I can afford to be put out of commission. However, this year, I have an important meeting on Friday where I need to be on top of my game.

So does anyone know of a remedy I can take to prevent the onset of this cold/flu? Or perhaps some medicine I can buy over the counter to combat the cold before it hits. Your help is appreciated. Thanks :)

    Clear secretion from the nose?
    Itchy Eyes?
Same time of the year every year?

You have allergies. Admit it. I used to be in denial because in Mexico NO ONE gets allergies. Here, everyone does.

Funny you say that. I do get it the same time every year. I do have clear secretion from the nose. However, I do not have itchy eyes. Also, I am extremely fatigued. Do you think I just need some Claritin?

if it really is the flu, and you already have it, there is no way to stop it from happening since its a virus. all you can do is let it run its course and treat the symptoms.

Take extra vitamin C, drink plenty of water/fluids, get plenty of sleep.

Take antihistimines to stop drainage, take pseudo ephedrine to ease congestion for temporary relief.

I went to the doctor about 4 years ago.
He comes back with my chart and says: "You came last year and the year before complaining about the same thing. You have the same symptoms. You have allergies."
"but, doc... Mexicans don't have allergies... "
"Oops. You mean you're still living in Mexico? ;) "

    He got me.

Just take a Claritin-D for the daytime, and a Benadryl at night and you'll sleep like a baby without a runny nose. You will now have allergies for the rest of your life. Trying to prevent it is like asking the Pope to go to Mecca or the United States national soccer team winning in Mexico city. Impossible. ;)

Hard to tell what you have right now, since the symptons just started to show up. Hope it's not flu, only a minor cold. Otherwise you probably won't feel much better on Friday - only less than 48 hours away.

Cheap way: drink copious amount water, take plenty of vitamin C, eat less than normal (if your appetite also decreases, mostly likely sign of flu). No alcohol/smoking. Sleep well (if possible, take some Tylenol PM). See what happen tomorrow morning.

I have the same symptoms for past 2 days as well. I slept the whole afternoon off, and after some Tylenols and a hot shower, I felt little bit better now. Hope I will feel even better after Astros win tonight.

Yes, it sounds allergies to me too. The sore throat may be an infection caused by the allergy you had.

If you only have problem with nose but eyes, use Flonase (sp?). It works like a charm on me. You do have to take it a week before the season starts. Claritin is ineffective to my problem.
