The militants who attacked the Buddhist temple in the southern Pattani province late on Saturday had slit the 76-year-old monk's throat, said a police report obtained by Reuters. The charred bodies of the two teenagers were found in the temple, said the report which did not give details. A Buddhist farmer was beheaded on Friday, the second decapitation since the Islamic holy month of Ramadan began and 12th in 21 months of unrest in the region. Although the government has sent 30,000 soldiers and police to the region, where 80 percent of people are Muslim, ethnic Malays, the insurgency appears to be growing. Booby traps, decoy attacks and ambushes of army and police convoys have become daily occurrences in the densely wooded region, suggesting the anti-Bangkok guerrillas are becoming more sophisticated and inventive.
Even though the insurgents are Muslim the rebellion there has very little to do with religion. In fact the Islamic state of Malaysia is helping the Thais fight the insurgency.
What should be noted for the sake of balance on Gwienerdog's daily muslim bash is that the Thai government has been particularly bloody and brutal in their crackdown in recent years which has drawn a lot of flak internationally, including from the US - which hasn't exactly left the Malaysian government ready to join hands in solidarity with them. As a consequence relations have soured and malaysia has been less willing to hand over dissidents.
I guess when you're dealing with animals who kill monks and decapitate farmers, you have to give them no mercy. This might be job for Tony Jaa.
Sam Fisher; You're right that recently things have soured a bit due to Thaksin's get tough policy but for most of the insurgency Malaysia has helped Thailand with the insurgency and as a member of ASEAN isn't interested in seeing it get worse. I'm far from an expert on the history of the Thai Muslim insurgency but I recall that the Thai government has previously made political offers of more autonomy and other benefits to the southern provinces to win over the population.
