Houston fans more crazy about the Astros than the Rockets?

I guarantee you there are more 'diehard' Rockets fans in this city and elsewhere than there are 'diehard' AStros fans.

Astros are the flavor of the month, nothing more.

When the rockets are in the playoffs, the TC is rockin. I was there for two Laker games in '03, and it was freaking loud. It doesn't get picked up on TV as well as it does at MMP, but it gets thunderously loud in there.

Regular games, not so much. But that might change after this year. People are still getting used to the post-Hakeem era. Houstonians only support a winner. The honeymoon for the Texans is soon to be over. They better start winning, or they'll be chased out of town :D

Heck, they give away UH football tickets, a concept that completely shocks this Texas alum.

And I bet you that there are more diehard "Houston" fans than any of the other two you mentioned above.

Being a diehard for one team does not preclude you from rooting for the other... most of the people I know would go to war for ANY of the Houston teams, as long as they were playing in Houston.

Frankly, that's the way it should be in a big city with multiple professional sports.

"and elsewhere" is a misleading statement. Did Yao Ming bring lots of his countrymen to the Rockets? Sure.

However, within the city of Houston, more people more of the time would identify as Astros fans than Rocket fans. The Astros organization has a 10+ year-lead on fandom, and baseball is still more of a "multigenerational sport" than basketball is.

Man.. I am a Rocket fan as much as you can imagine.. but the Stro's are 2 games from the World Series! I don't know how you can compare Rockets preseason vs. the Stro's. Even if they played at the same time and both were going to the WS and Finals.. I would have to watch the Stro's. Especially because of such heartbreak in recent years and it doesn't look like Biggio and Bagwell will play too much longer.. I would love for them to get their rings.. besides.. the Rockets already have a couple championships.. all we now is for the Stro's to win theirs. I am not holding my breath for the Texans anytime soon. :)

    Sorry to disturb you :p

However if you don't know anybody anywhere that would root against other sports teams in their city, you just don't know many people. You don't think that there are die-hard Celtics fans that can't stand football or baseball and get tired of hearing Patriots this, Red Sox that? I can gaurantee you that there are plenty of Celtics fans that are all smiles about the Patriots only being 3-2 and getting blown out by the Chargers. You honestly don't think there are?

And by the way, I'm rooting for the Astros now that they're so close to winning it all. Like I said before, even if they lose the next 3 games their "buzz" will still encroach on the Rockets regular season. So why not just cheer them on and hope they can bring some championship fever to Houston? I just didn't want them in the playoffs to begin with that's all. :D

Unfortunately, you're wrong here. I wish it were that way, but people in Houston are:
    Football first
    Baseball (firm) second
    Basketball third

People here love their Astros and they've never won anything. They love their football and the Oilers were a joke, and the Texans are terrible. The Rockets brought Houston its only pro sports championship, two in fact, and still get treated like the stepchild. As a lifelong Rockets diehard and Houstonian, I find it very frustrating.

Exactly. This is just typical sport fan whining.

"The refs don't respect us. The media doesn't respect us. The fans don't respect us." Blah blah blah.

I can't believe people are complaining about the Astros. Incredible.

I'm a die-hard Rockets fan, but I give two poops about preseason - Go Astros!

Wasn't there something about a lot of Rox players watching the Stros game together the other day? You know Tracy is watching Roger and seeing him gut it out, I bet it's getting the ROX juiced to top 'em...

(and yeah, Mr. Clutch, I wish the Rox would let Luther into a game... He's gotta stop scoring all those points from the bench. :p )

Don't get me wrong, I'm definitely rooting for the Astros. It would be awesome if they could make it to the World Series. I'm just pointing out the difference in popularity between the sports, and I wish the Rocks could get a little more support consistently.

The postseason of any sport is infinitely more exciting than the preseason.

Funny, I don't recall any Astros fans logging on in May and wondering if Rockets playoff mania was encroaching on the Astros season... .

As said before...I'm a Houston fan. Right now, what's more important?

    A) Watching the Rox in the preseason in games that have NO IMPACT whatsoever on their season (barring injury)

    or

    B) Watching the Astros (a team that's been in this city for longer than the Rockets, IIRC) get to one win away from a World Series (a round Houstonians have never experienced)?

I think we have a new term...ROF (rox only fan!) haha :D

    Some of you misunderstood me.

I am a HUGE "Houston" fan, any team I root my heart out for them. As of right now, of course I care more about the Astros since they are playing ONE FREAKIN' GAME FROM THE WORLD SERIES, a place this franchise has NEVER beem.

My point is this: Houstonians are dying for the Astros to get to the WS, and hopefully win it. The Rockets have been there before and won it twice, and therefore IMO the city has much higher 'standards' for the Rockets than any of the other pro teams in the city, and for good reason.

IMO, the city is much hungrier for an Astros title than anything else at this point, and very much understandably so.

With that being said, however, I have MORE than enough of myself to give to each Houston franchise, so it's not like my support for the Astros will distract me from my dedication to the Rockets.

    I am a Houston fan.

Seriously... if you're a true Houston fan, you treat these teams like your kids.

Sure, sometimes you spend more time with one of your kids if they need you more... but it doesn't mean you love the other one any less.

Whoever brought up the point that there must be Celtic fans who are happy the Bo Sox and Pats are losing doesnt' get it... there are probably only 3% of fans who would actually be like that... but 85+% of the fans of a certain team from a certain city will likely root for all the teams (or at least not root against any of them).

Personally, I'm a big fan of baseball and basketball, but could care less about football. That said, it annoys the crap out of me that our football team is as bad as they are but I would never root against them.

To wish that the Astros weren't in the playoffs so that "Houston could concentrate on the Rockets," or whatever nonsense was spewed above, is asinine. Seriously, good God man, the baseball playoffs will barely interfere with the beginning of the season. Not to mention that if people are excited about the Astros in the playoffs but not the Rockets they are either bandwagon fans or aren't basketball fans to begin with. If you're a Rockets fan, I don't know how you can't be excited after this offseason.

How can you say something like that? I hope the reason you feel this way is not because the Astros have Houston's undivided attention ... otherwise that would be plain selfish. Not trying to pick a fight here but true Houstonians would never say something like that.

    GO 'STROS!!!!!!
