My roommate recently had a horrible experience with Staples. Since it's such a prolific store, I thought that I should pass on a warning. My roommate, John, owns an iMac (silly boy). A relative bought him a new printer for it for his birthday. Knowing that iMac's have serious compatibility issues with many printers, he asked the Staples salesperson to point out which printers would be best, and bought the recommended machine. Well, John opened the box a couple weeks later on his birthday, and after a couple days of tinkering, finally found out that the printer was NOT compatible. There were no markings on the box to indicate this. He eventually found out by staying on the Mac customer support line for about an hour. He tried to take it back to Staples; sorry, they said... it had been purchased more than a week ago and the box was opened. John explained to them that ordinarily, that made sense, but in this case, their own employee had made the mistake. The employee confessed that he had been recommending this printer to various customers who owned Imacs, but the store manager wouldn't budge. John, being the conscienscious business major that he is, proceeded to write letters up the Staples chain of management. His final rejection letter came yesterday, from a VP of sales. Staples was sorry for the mistake, but was unwilling to replace the merchandise. I thought this was pretty appalling, given that they conceded their employee had made the mistake. Well... I won't be going there next time I need office merchandise! ------------------ A few years back on the Senate floor... Phil Gramm: "If Democrats could, they'd tax the air we breathe." That's pretty amazing that Staples would do that considering all the price-matching and coupons they let people use to rip them off! That is just pathetic especially if they recommended it in the first place. What I would do if you haven't already done it is try taking it to another Staples and see if they'd take it back. When I do pricematches online, one CSR may not give me the pricematch, but another one will (usually because they're clueless). ------------------ "Light travels faster than sound, so some people appear to be bright until you hear them speak." -- Brian Williams (now Bison Dele) commenting on Isiah Thomas.
Oh, and if you do get another Staples to take it back, I'd go take the refund receipt to that original store that rejected you and tell them what a dumbass company they run and thanks for the refund. Throw a "beeeyaaaaatch" in there somewhere for effect. Then never shop with them again... By the way, I just checked their site and it says they have a 14-day return policy on printers. Or is that only for online orders? ------------------ "Light travels faster than sound, so some people appear to be bright until you hear them speak." -- Brian Williams (now Bison Dele) commenting on Isiah Thomas. DoD: I'm not sure, I'll ask my roommate about it though . I doubt the store thing would work, since he did write to their VP of Sales. ------------------ A few years back on the Senate floor... It doesn't matter. Trust me. All you're looking for is a clueless person that doesn't know about the 7-day rule. Heck, if that fails, tell them their website says 14 days. Even if it doesn't work, at least he can say he tried all possible avenues. ------------------ "Light travels faster than sound, so some people appear to be bright until you hear them speak." -- Brian Williams (now Bison Dele) commenting on Isiah Thomas.
Should we boycott Staples too ? ------------------ "norm, would you like to buy an indian scalp ? This deal isn't gonna make or break me Norm, so don't jerk me around." Harry Carey "Norm, if I had a mohawk scalp, I wouldn't be sitting here talking to you."
Haven, Was it a Staples here in Houston? If it was, then get Emily Aikins from channel 2 on it. I'll bet Staples will give you anything you want if the news cameras show up. If not here, then they're bound to have a consumer action news station(huh?) where you're at that could help. No business wants bad publicity. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Hottoddie (edited June 06, 2001).]
