Was just walking across campus. I acquired the following points of data:

-"Hey, Isabel, how are you doing?" ("Good, how are you.") He also threw in a "what's happening" after we had walked past each other, and he was already with someone else anyway. The obligatory greeting gets longer and longer...

-"Hey, how are you doing?" ("Good".) "Good!"

and, if they wondered why I looked like I was about to laugh, it was because I was thinking I'll have to report these observations back to the bbs. :)

I've found through years of research that regardless of what they say to you a simple "hi" is more then enough... just say "hi" and keep walking, even if they stop to talk... it's a hoot.

I really wonder if this is a Texas thing because these are the things that other regions consider what makes us so hospitable.

I like the following the best:

Walker #1: "Hey, how are you?"
Walker #2: "Good! How are you?"
    Walker #1: "Good!"

It's called the greeting off-set...you off-set each other.

To the cool people in a formal workplace, I like to say the following:

    "Wasup, dude!"

I don't care if their walking with the CEO, CIO, or whomever.

    "WAAAAAAAAZZZZZZZZZZUPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP?!?!?!?!!!?!"

I'm always messing these obligatory things up anyway.

    Friend 1: What's up?
    twhy77: Fine, and you?
    <awkward pause> d'oh, I really screwed that one up.

Sometimes I have hello periods and non-hello periods with people. That is strange too. Cause you never know what's coming next. One month you don't say anything. The next you do. Then you don't.

I also have a habit of giving a subtle head knod when I pass people on the street. It's not like I want any kind of communication, I don't, but so many people say hi back to me because of it. I don't even know them. It's crazy. Then I have to say hi back. Then all the sudden I see them again on the street and now I have to say hi everytime. I don't even know the person. They don't know me. But it's like we have to be hello partners now. ughhhh.

Just having to nod my head and smile drives me nuts ~ actually having to say something -- well nevermind...

A simple "hello/hey" is acknowledgement but letting the person you do not want to carry a conversation. "hello, how are you doing" is offering a conversation.

Like RM95 said, it's just another way of saying hello for me. I usually greet someone with "hey, how you doin'?"...with the Texas ommision of the 'g' and everything lol. I don't expect a detailed answer...usually people just say hey or hello back.

There is a difference IMO between "how you doin" and "Hey! How are you?"...the latter seems to merit a more detailed answer, which is probably what macalu is talking about. Unless it is a friend you haven't seen in a while, nobody usually cares for a detailed response.

Wow...I'm really overanalyzing here I think.

The world would probably be a better place if people ACTUALLY cared about one one another.

I walk with my head down 75% of the time, so anyone further than 10 feet away from me won't bother saying anything because they figure I don't see them. In the even that someone actually does say something, I usually just smile at them and keep walking.

On the flip side of things, I only truly care how 5 or 6 people people are doing, and those people I make a point of talking to on a regular basis so that we don't have to say stupid stuff in the hall.
