Hopefully the Rockets' management sees this too and signs Luther to a max extension no later than Friday PM.
From the Francis, Mobley, Cato days, YES its a big turn around I think it all started when we picked up JVG.
I love it! Anyway, it was just one game. One preseason game. And he played, what, about a quarter's worth of game time? Yeah, he sure did look good out there, though. Keep it up, rookie! And don't think for a second this means you won't be carrying bags all season.
JVG's quote in the Chronicle about how Luther might have passed the ball more....well, how many minutes did he play? And he still managed 3 assists despite playing with the 2nd-teamers and the not-gonna-make-the-team'ers. This kid is gonna be really good for us. P.S. Didn't he have one hell of a bounce pass into the post? Or was that Moochie's? I thought it was Luther making that pass but I could be wrong.
It's funny that everyone here is praising Head's game last night while he probably got his ass completely chewed out by JVG for not passing.
Skip is only 29, he'll be playing at a high level for at least 3 or 4 more years assuming he doesn't implode. Its way too early to talk about a PG of the future
maybe we might actually have a rookie that will be useful to us? Dallas had a number of them the last few season that turned out to be pretty good players. Here's to hoping Head is one we won't forget.
I agrre with this statement totally but Luther will be backing him up and with his defense may take minutes away from Westley, John Barry and an injured Bobby Sura.
Turning around 360 means that you're facing the same direction. If Head can develop into any of the following, I'll be happy. 1. SG in the mold of Cat or Wes. Good jumper, good defender, can move without the ball. 2. PG who can run the offense, and not make mistakes. 3. Instant offense off the bench, ala Mike James.
Luther Head looked *MUCH* more polished than I expected, but Kelvin Cato taught us long ago not to get too excited about flashes of preseason brilliance. By the end of the season, Head could very well be a rotation guy. That's impressive for a rookie point guard playing for a team that has serious title aspirations. I'll give him more than one game against AAA talent before crowning him the future starting PG for the Rockets, though.
Head remind me of an athletic version of Bob Sura. Meaning he brings the ball up quick without hesitation and is not afraid of dribbling in and out of the paint. Bob is awesome at that and Head shows great penetration with control.
Stop it with the reference already! I didn't get to watch the game last night, but if his game resembles Mobley's in anyway, he could be very valuable off the bench. I'd be hesitant to judge how good he is until he plays with the 1st team and see how much chemistry he has with them first.
While I think it is premature to label Luther as our PG of the future right now...I can understand the excitement. Most folks had already decided that he wasnt gonna be any good. It was great to see the kid has some game. Whether or not he makes it to starter material or not...it sure dont hurt to have a kid like him on the team. HE did in fact show some good passing skills...granted most of the time he was in there, he was in there as the 2 since Moochie was on the floor with him. I do think given some time..he can learn to take his skills and apply them to the PG position, and in a few years when Rafer is getting older and worn down...Luther *could* be our future starting PG...it isnt a impossible scenario..
It's only one pre-season game, folks. Let's not get too caught up on it. Besides, it's not as if he actually played against Philly's best players. But the player he reminded me of while I watched last night was... Sam Cassell. Actually, Cassell is basically the player I really, really hope Head can turn into. That is, a capable backup guard in the first few years, and eventually develop into a solid starting PG when Alston becomes old. Of course, that is my severely optimistic dream scenario. I think it's more likely that he'll turn into a Mike James or a David Wesley. Or, like any young player, he could be a bust and get released instead.
You guys who didn't know who Luther Head is must not have watched too much of March Madness this past year. He was a solid player in College. Last night he reminded me of Cuttino Mobley's game. BUt that was last night... Let's see what he can do over a long stretch of time. Conner Henry got hot enough in preseason one year and the Rox kept him over Craig Ehlo. Ehlo went on to have a few decent years with the Cavs.
