Rockets Fans - Meet Luther Head

The transition from college to the NBA is arguably the most difficult transition that an NBA player has to make during his career. Instead of playing thirty games a year, it’s 82. Instead of two games per week, its at the very least three, and more often it’s four. Instead of being the star on campus for a nationally ranked team, now you’re playing against players who are (gasp!) more talented than you. For Rockets rookie Luther Head, the roughest part of his NBA rookie year is yet to come. However, fans can expect Head to attack the rigors of NBA life with the same calm and poise that he did at the University of Illinois, where he lead the Fighting Ilini to a 37-2 overall record last year, with averages of 15.9 points and four rebounds per contest. The 6’3”, 185-pound Chicago native is a soft-spoken yet confident young man who much rather let his playing do the talking than himself. Yet he was still kind enough to sit down with rockets.com after a tiring practice to answer a few questions:

    1. What was your reaction after you found out you were drafted with the 24th pick by the Rockets?

I didn’t have any expectations. I didn’t have any place that I thought I would go. I just went into the draft hoping that I’d get picked, and if I did get picked then (I’d) give my all to whichever team that drafts me.

    2. What was the first thing you bought after being a drafted?

    A steak dinner. (Laughs)

    3. How has your first NBA training camp been like?

It’s been great. I’m learning a lot and I’m getting used to the coaches, the lingo, and the way they present things. It’s going well.

    4. What are your early firs impressions of coach Van Gundy?

He’s a great coach. He’s a great teacher. He knows the game to a “T”. He teaches us all things. He’s not going to sugarcoat anything. If he wants you to work on something, he’s just going to come out and tell you.

    5. Being from the midwest in Chicago, how has your transition been as you’re now in Houston?

I just have to get used to the heat. (Laughs). I love the city and I love the people. The people are friendly. Everybody’s just humble.

    6. How does coming from winning team at Illinois help in your adjustment and transition to the NBA?

It’s definitely important. It teaches you about going out on the court and trying to win. It teaches you about being a competitor and that’s me.

    7. What do you bring to the team?

I bring me. I have a competitive spirit and I go out there every possession, trying to win. I give 110% energy. I’ve got confidence that I can go out there and do the things that coach wants me to do. It’s all about what coach wants from me. I just want to help my team win in any way possible.

He certainly seems to have tons of confidence, reminds me of Cuttino when he first joined the Rox.

The guy is going to be good, thanks for the article yaomania.

One game - he looks good. We'll see what happens tomorrow. He definintely earned some playing time tomorrow. He looks good though. Good pick, once again, good job CD and staff.

Great game by Luther tonight...initiated the offense a lot in the halfcourt sets and also hit some nice shots...very good penetrator and he looked very comfortable out there for being a rookie...but its just preseason...nothing matters until november 2nd

Wasn't this article posted a few months ago, shortly after the Rockets drafted him?

Seriously, it's only a matter of time before we get tons of "Free Head" sigs.
