Astros GM Tim Purpura made a mistake the other day when he attempted to tell the Chronicle's Brian McTaggart how happy he was to have Adam Everett healthy for these playoffs.

In praising Everett, he inadvertently insulted Jose Vizcaino.

``(Jose Vizcaino) did a nice job, but Viz, as we know, is not an everyday player," Purpura said. "He's a great role player, and having Adam's defense in there ... I really look back at last year and if we had Andy and Adam it would have been a different story.''

He remembers it differently than I do. I remember Vizcaino playing very well, both offensively and defensively. I can't imagine Everett would have been better. Vizcaino certainly wasn't why the Astros didn't go to the World Series.

Purpura met with Vizcaino to discuss the comments.

What is Purpura thinking making comments like that? Jose did very good last year on both ends. I would be insulted and pissed if I was Jose. Adam Everett hasn't done squat this postseason.

everything Purpura said is the truth. And it's not really an insult - Vizcaino is not an everyday player - he's a role player. Seems like Justice is just stirring the ****.

I wouldn't read too much into this. I'm pretty sure Viz knows he's a role player.

I guess Justice forgot Jose's .205 average, .247 OBP, .301 SLG and .548 OPS last September.

Not to mention his .191, average, .204 OBP, .213 SLG and .417 OPS in the playoffs.

And I think we would all agree that there is no comparison in their defense.

They've been saying all season that this is most likely his last in Houston. Look for him to sign with either San Diego (where his family lives) or one of the LA area teams. If not one of those three, I would imagine he will retire.

We've got Bruntlett as the all purpose infielder and Purp will probably look to sign another utility player.

Anyone know how Billy Spiers back is doing? ;)
