the bar is nice- the rest of the restaurant wraps around the back and isn't immediately apparent from the front. they have an open kitchen, beautiful red leather banquettes, and great food. here's an excellent cookbook by the chef.

there is a lot to see in brooklyn. depends how much time you want to spend there. go to park slope and you can do the brooklyn museum, the botanical garden and prospect park in one fell swoop. afterwards, go to either cocoa bar or the chocalate room. they are decadent wine/chocolate/coffee bars. here's a forum discussing them:
    http://dailyheights.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=875&sid=67a189cabe90c62235f781cfaf14d482

here are more bars in the area:

if you have yet more time, coney island is a must.

Corned beef on rye, baby. The only way to fly. Their matzo ball soup is pretty good too.

When I was a kid, my family was visiting NYC, and we all went to the 2nd Avenue deli for lunch. My older brother, who was about 9 at the time, ordered a corned beef sandwich on white bread with mayonnaise.

The waitress nearly had a stroke right in front of us.

You guys are making me starving talking about Delis, damn you all! I haven't eaten yet today. I'm actually sitting in class "researching" you guys for my Rhetoric of Cybercultures class. I have to write a paper on a cybercommunity. I think I'll go analyze a deli after class.

Last time I went to NY over spring break we stayed in Harlem which was much nicer than the stereotype has you believe.

    Places to eat:

Broadway Joe's - good food! i think joe namath bought the place or something like that, the paper on the table should tell u about a little history on the place and how it's been filmed by a couple of movies.. located near broadway and 8th street i think?

chinatown has some good food, i forgot which place i went to eat over there but theres a small restaurant near the border of little italy and chinatown that had many awards for their good food.. i just cant think of the name. its a vietnamese restaurant though, not chinese.

alot of good places too eat.. i just cant think of the names.

    Entertainment/Sight seeing:

Central Park- they have a big mall over there as well.
    Fifth Avenue- shopping
chinatown- fake rolexes, lv wallets/purses, haha just make sure they look real!

Try to get tickets to a Broadway show. Both Spamalot and Wicked are excellent. Also, Billy Crystal has a one man show named "700 Sundays" but I don't know if it's still playing.

I'd like to see Wicked, but my wife has already seen it. We're on an expense account, but I'm just a "hanger-on" so I have to go with the flow.

I have wanted to go there for a long time. I looked on Hotwire and the room prices looked very pricey, $300 a night and up. How much did you get your room for ?

Depends on how much you're willing to spend - if you're of the species Homo Australius Shoestringtravelius, that populates youth hostels & budget dorms worldwide , your choices will be grim - but February is the at or near the dead of the offseason as far as NY hotels go, so I think you should be able to swing a decent room in the 150$ range or below (which may include breakfast or a few extras) as far as a weekend package/special deal. That won't be for a 5 star Waldorf/Plaza/Grand style suite but it will be decent enough (say 3-4 star quality).

Also, some of the hotels far downtown in the financial district run weekend specials so I would check that out.

You could stay at my apartment - but I don't have one!

    thanks Sam

don't do Hostels.... so good value hotels are the go, stayed at Chelsea Star last time i was there and then some dodgy hotel the time before that was round the corner from seinfield cafe......

plus hope to have accomm with friends in the other cities so can afford to spend a bit in NYC

really liked the spot the Chelsea star was, think it was a block or two from the back of MSG, but I guess actually in terms of location somewhere different would be nice....

did some preliminary search thru websites and travelaxe and looks like 100-150 per night for something 3star ish looks possible

i presume with it being low season it is better to book latter when the rooms are empty and hotels are desperate to fill them

would try to go more downtown (below 23d street) but then I am a bit of a downtown snob.

    This place:
    http://www.travelnow.com/entry/hd/c...&HotelId=NYC 17&HName=HOTEL 17&unique=1334326

was not far from my old apartment(s), and I never saw the inside, but good location on a nice block - I imagine it's not that posh as the primary guests seemed to be heavily back pack laden, but good locale at least.

This place has a KILLER location for downtown, but again, I can't tell you much about the rates/value

    http://www.travelnow.com/entry/hd/c...KF=MBR&HName=WASHINGTON SQUARE&unique=9881552

    Another good location:

    http://www.google.com/local?hl=en&l...latlng=40714167,-74006389,5042683267734491770

EDIT: scratch that last one, apparently closed and being turned into a five-star hotel - I figured that would happen at some point, location was too good.

But I'm betting you will probably get better value in the midrange category around Times Square and the 40's streets generally - that is where my parents usually stay when they would visit, and they get a decent deal.

I'm actually back from my trip. We crammed so much stuff into just a few days it was ridiculous. I can't even imagine how many miles my fat ass walked. The things that were most memorable were the chicken and waffles at Amy Ruths in Harlem, the bittersweet hot chocolate at La Maison du Chocolat (underpriced at 7 bucks for a small cup; Sees and Godiva will NEVER live up to my expectations again), and St. John's the Divine Cathedral (and I don't spend a lot of time in churches).

Like Fondue? There's a place I've been to a couple of times called Dip. It's on Third at 30th. I highly recommend the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough dessert fondue. Here's their web site: www.dipcafe.com

As for hotels, they're hard to recommend as you can't just stay anywhere in town...it needs to be close to what you plan on doing. My boyfriend lives in Greenwich Village...I normally stay with him there. However, if we're planning to see a show we occassionally get a room in Midtown so we can play after the show longer (and I just don't like overnight cabbies...they tend to scare me). It's a bit pricey, but the Algonquin is really nice. Just be sure to make friends with Matilda, the cat.

I thought this thread would be about the heightened security up in NY now. My advice, possibly just stay away. Per the chronicle: A New York City police officer stands guard outside the New York Stock Exchange today amid heightened security. The investigation into an alleged plot to bomb the city's subway moved forward on several fronts today as a third suspect was arrested. Link.... http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/front/3385988
