Has anyone played any Half-Life 2 mods? I'm wondering what are some good ones to download.

That, and where do you generally go to download mods?

Besides the 'official' mods you mean? (Dod,Dod:S, CS:S and so on...)

A great mod came out called Dystopia . It's an extremely high quality product. You'd hardly think it could come from a modding team. Although I guess you can expect how well they got their idea across for Valve themselves to fly 3 or so of them up there from Aussie land to visit their offices. It's a great game, has a role for anyone. Very professional, my fav mod ATM.

A Modern combat mod called Plan of Attack which has great strategic elements. Think CS without randomness everywhere heh. A bit more realistic though I didn't play it for long. After playing CS for years even mods that can be slightly like it don't really stick for long. It's worth a go though, has potential and is ready to go as-is.

Then there are others, something like Garry's Mod is fun to play around with, can basically do anything with physics. It's amazing what you can do with it. You can make anything, and I mean anything. Then destroy it or add a few Npcs and battle it out in a recent fort you made. Or make a vehicle of your choice out of an assortment of wood, drive it through fire and watch it fall apart as you drive. I spent so much time with that mod, haven't had much time recently though.

Also, there's HL2 Capture the flag which I thought was fun for a bit but if I play a CTF game it has to be TFC! Just can't compare IMHO. I honestly didn't play it very long, but I also haven't played it since the first few releases. It's quite possible it has had a lot of progress since I last played it.

I had fun with a mod Called HL2 Source Forts. It had an update recently but I can't seem to find their Official site. Anyways, think CTF with a pre-round where you use whatever you can to build a fort with, then the round starts with your newly made fort. It's pretty fun.

There are others, and a LOT of them in dev!

I usually go to MODDB for all my HL2 modding info (and other games).

I kept it brief, if you want any further info just ask, didn't know how much you were into the modding scene :D .

Thanks Tapefreak. What do you mean by official mods? I'm looking for free mods that are floating around the internet. I used to download lots of mods for the old half-life etc.

Official as in they originally started out as mod projects, became hugely popular and Valve sucked em' up. Such as with both Counter Strike and Day of Defeat. As far as I know both the original CS and DoD are still free. However, the Source updates of them are not, although they are worth it IMHO. Although DoD is lacking somewhat, a few bugfixes and maps and I'd be happy.

However all the others that I listed are true mods, free and still working on further updates as far as I'm aware. Those are all HL2 mods. Though as was previously mentioned in this thread, Natural Selection for HL1 is still very good.

Though I'd reccomend Dystopia for sure if I had to pick only one. Sci-fi, Kind of like Tron on crack. Cool!

There are TONS of very promising mods in the work. The two that instantly hit me off the top of my head are Fortress Forever and Insects Infestation .

Keep an eye out for those. Both look like quality mods to come. Also another good one that just hit me was Jurassic Rage . They all look cool but are at different stages in their development.

There are so many more in-dev, and also released. It's a giant world once you delve into it, check it out!

It's a great mod, I'm just glad I ordered the Silver package when I picked up HL2. Seems like a good buy now! Needs a few bug fixes and additional maps and then it can re-add a few weapons that were lost in the conversion. (FG-42 comes to mind)

I'm addicted to the Bazooka class though. And not even really for the Bazooka, but for the Carbine, I love that weapon.

Yeah, it definately has it's glitches (like CS:Source did) but it is a blast... I got the Gold package (the 90 dollar one) way back when just to play CS:Source in early beta... and glad I did. Every aspect of HL2 is well worth the money... can't wait for the upcoming addon.

That addon is free right? I think it's a chapter with the new lighting added. From the screencaps I looked at over a month ago it looked spectacular. I wonder how much gameplay can be expected from it.

Anyways, Uprising, did you check out any of the mods I posted? Wanted to see if I helped you in anyway, as it's always nice to see people getting into the modding scene!

Day of Defeat: Source is only "free" if you bought the silver or gold Half-Life 2 packages online... otherwise it is $19.99, but worth every penny.

I was in the midst of downloading one of them the other night but my download was stuck for some odd reason. I'll try it again.

Although some of those seemed like demos. I'm hopping to find a mod that many people are playing. There are many mods out there I'm sure, but I don't want to waste my time downloading ones that have no population to them (if they are multiplayer...)

Actually, HL2 hasn't really been out long enough for the really ground breaking mods to be ready. Most of the mods out now are simple in that they just change the rules of the game in various ways. Check out www.hlfallout.net for the latest mod updates and news... one of the more promising large scale mods is Hull Breach: http://www.hull-breach.com

I was actually talking about HL2 Lost Coast. I thought I heard it was a free addition, just a chapter. DoD:S is $20 unless you have a Silver/Gold package.

On the mods being non-popular, that's odd. The ones I listed are the mods that I know the most, and all are populated, and I play from Germany. So you'll have no problem in the States.

Also, the only reason Dystopia is labeled as a 'Demo' is because they're in talks with Valve, apparently, to make it into a fully supported game something like the DoD and CS takeover. It's the most polished of the ones I listed IMHO, besides the 'OFFICIAL' mods that is.
