Anybody who's more experienced in the ways of the world: My share of my rent is $700. I just received to checks for $340 and the other for $320. However, there is $300 in my account + an automatic $300 dollar protection. So, if either check goes through, I have enough for rent. However, when I deposited the checks a few minutes ago, the clerk told me it took 2 business days to process checks, so the money would not be available until Wednesday or Thursday. I observed that one check was another Fleet one, so it should be instantaneous (same bank) or at least verifiable, and that the other one was from my mom, who sends me the same allowance every month, so that perhaps they should cut me some slack. The guy said sorry on both accounts. I need a money order, because my check book was recently burned (don't ask) and the new one won't be here for a few days. They don't issue temporary checks. Is it worth my trouble to talk to a higher up? I mean, it makes sense that they should cut me some slack. Both checks, to me, seem pretty reliable, and they should be able to ascertain one of them instantly. But is this something a bank simply isn't going to do? I've been a good customer for 3 years now. Sorry to bother you guys with this... but my landlord's a bit zealous about rent being on time, and I want to know if it's worth trying to petition Fleet management for help here. ------------------ A few years back on the Senate floor... It might be easier to talk with your landlord than the bank? Explain the situation to your landlord, if he's halfway decent he should understand. Or write him the check with the stipulation that he hold on to it, till both checks clear? good luck, rH ------------------ visit: The Psychedelic Groove House of Rockets Basketball Love!

They shouldn't hassle you on the one from the same bank. I'd go higher up. Here's a way around that situation for future reference: Cash both checks, then deposit the cash in the bank. Cash is credited the same day. ------------------ I always thought "With my talent, it's only a matter of time before I'm discovered". Behad is right. You can just cash the checks and deposit them, but it is stupid to say that they can't clear a check from their own bank. I have a friend who works for Bank One and he told me that checks are not held unless... 1. They are over $5000 and you have no history of deposits for that much 2. They are from a bank that is out of the state Personally, if you are really concerned, I would just cash the Fleet check at the teller window and then make out a deposit slip and hand them the cash for a deposit. If anything, it will demonstrate just how stupid their rules are. IMO, banks are getting harder to deal with. My friend told me that Bank One, like many other banks, has added dozens of new fees and restrictions over the past two years. He also told me that banks have had to go to many of these restrictions and fees because of the streamlining process moving from manual counts to computers. He said the risk of loss is far greater now causing banks to get more restrictive and expensive. ------------------ The internet is about the free exchange and sale of other people's ideas. - Futurama
Jeff: When I first started banking there 3 years ago, I liked it quite a bit... of course, it was called "bankboston" at the time. Fleet, a primarily corporate bank, bought them out, and since then there have been more fees and customer service has become awful. I'm planning to return to Texas for law/grad school, so I'm not going to change... but I think your friend was right. Anyone have a bank they'd recommend? ------------------ A few years back on the Senate floor... Phil Gramm: "If Democrats could, they'd tax the air we breathe." I have an account with Compass. Last i check i had under a hundred dollars. It was wittled down to almost $30. Then one month, they charged me $35 for yearly fees. This put me over the limit, and tacked on an additional $30 NSF! Now i have a -$75 balance! This is bull****! I havn't withdrawn anything in the account in about 6 months, and unfortuately, I don't live in houston anymore so i can't close it. Since they probably have a legal right to do this, what happens if I do not pay this? ------------------ If Bill Gates had a dime for every time Windows crashed... Oh, Wait!! He Does!
I bank with Bank of America, but I have all my accounts there - business and personal, which gives me some breaks. For personal, you should just look around for the best fee schedule and a bank that has some history to it. ------------------ The internet is about the free exchange and sale of other people's ideas. - Futurama
The only good thing I remember about living in Amarillo was the banks, specifically Amarillo National Bank. No service-charge checking, $300 overdraft protection, $15 NSF charge for overdrafts. The bank doesn't even pull the old bank trick of clearing the biggest checks first. It seems to me that since the bank is locally owned and operated, they do a better job of listening to their customers (and they've had to fight off the entry of big banks like Bank of America into the market). They're not perfect, but they're better than any other bank I've ever dealt with. I also have accounts at Bank of America, and they're okay. The only thing is that they have fees for accounts (I'm spoiled by the no service charge accounts at ANB) and their NSF fee is far higher if you mistakenly bouce a check (hasn't happened to me on that account... yet). Because they're a large bank run by an absent, out-of-town board, there seems to be less flexibility with rules, etc. At ANB, I could often get someone to bend the rules to help me out if need be. I don't think BofA would be as willing to help out. I also have a Washington Mutual (formerly Bank United) account, but I haven't had it long enough to know whether they are good or not. But, it's a no service-charge account. I suspect they'll be essentially like BofA, though. I only wish that ANB would put up branches in D/FW so I wouldn't have to think about dealing with these larger, multistate banks (some of which carry names of states I've never even been to). ------------------ Houston Sports Board Film Dallas.com AntiBud.com
the check from the same bank is what in the business is termed an "On-us" check. this means that you can cash this check.you dont even need an account at the bank to cash an on-us check. (if however the account from which the check is being drawn is overdrawn than you cant get jack untill there are funds available in that account) a local check should clear in 3 business days. an out of state check should clear in 5 business days. internationa can take more than 7 business days. it all depends on the clearing house. any how back to you. you deffinately can cash the fleet bank(on-us) check at the branch immediately. than deposit those funds as cash. this now means that you have over 600 in yout account(cash is immediate) now you should be able to cash your other check against your account. this is common practice and is a general practice in banking. so at this point you have 600+ in the account as well as 300+ in hand. you can buy your money order(cashiers checks cannot be bought with cash) there is probably a 3.50 fee per check. money orders cannot exceed 1000. also instead of the cashiers check/money order thing you chould have your branch make a counter check for you. just go talk to someone sitting at the desk. they are called customer service reps. they have more power, and are more likely to be healpfull. they are basicly glorified tellers, but one of them is also usually the branch manager. you should be able to get your funds in order at the bank otherwise there is another advantage for you. that same 3 days that it is gonna take for your funds to become available your land lord is gonna have to wait for your check to clear in his account. helpfull tip#1 date your check for the first(that way it is useless untill the first)and it will only clear 3 business days after that. get a counter check made(it is free and all banks make them, just go the the customer service reps. well i gotta go, good luck, im sure my post was useless as someone probably already answered it and i might have been overly verbose. well later, PEACE ------------------ Hanta-Force Paintball www.hanta-force.com
