CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Shouting "Jesus Christ" on the tennis court cost a high school doubles team a match and the state championship. Scott and Andrew Felsenthal of White Station were declared the champs Thursday after Bearden's Cameron Boyd shouted "Jesus Christ" after losing serve and dropping to 3-5 after splitting the first two sets. Jan Genosi, the Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association official at the match, came onto the court and disqualified Boyd and partner Brandon Allan for violating the profanity rule. Genosi said the TSSAA closely follows U.S. Tennis Association rules, which allow "Jesus" and "Christ" but not together. "You allow 'Jesus' and you allow 'Christ,' but you won't allow them together?" Boyd asked Genosi. "That's ridiculous." State tennis rules call for an automatic default on a first offense for visible or audible profanity or obscenity or physical abuse of a player or official. "I don't have any leeway," Genosi said. "I'm going by the rule." Bearden coach Ann Ham said she had not heard that phrase included in warnings about forbidden profanity. Scott Felsenthal would have preferred to win on the court and thought it should have drawn a warning. "But I'm also glad they enforce such strict rules," he said. The deal is that they follow the USTA rules for professional tennis where that exact rule is written. Of course, the USTA doesn't throw out a player on the first infraction or John MacEnroe wouldn't have made it out of a set let alone a match. Personally, I think the USTA rule is ridiculous and obviously not vigorously enforced by them anyway. However, I understand why it happened. I think that rule is dumb. I play hockey a lot and whenever I screw something up I get really pissed at myself so during the games I will scream "Jesus", "****", and "Damn" I am saying these b/c I am upset at myself and they are directed to me. I don't understand how "Jesus Christ" could be an offensive word accepted by everyone. The basic cuss words are accepted as being crude by all people, but wouldn't saying "Jesus Christ" only be offensive to Christians? What's silly is that they're allowed to yell out either the first or last name, but they can't use them together. That's just crazy.
