Hello all. I just experienced my first car accident today, and am a bit shaken up. [IMG] Although my car (actually my sisters car) is pretty banged up, through the grace and power of God I walked away without a scratch, as did the other driver (who I coincidentally knew). The accident was actually partially my fault, as I was turning left going into a bank parking lot, and the oncoming driver on the right lane waved me to go through. Dumbass that I am, I went ahead and took my turn without really properly checking if there was a car coming on the lane beside him, only to have a car on the left lane come out from nowhere and hit me from the front.

Luckily, I am OK and my sister took it pretty well, while insurance should cover the costs as well as the rental. Though I'm a young driver and have only had my full license for less than a year, I consider myself a good and safe drive who happened to make a mistake today. I will probably end up losing a few points and a small fine (though my dad say it can easily be contested). However, the bigger loss may be my confidence in driving, and I can't help but think of the woulda's, coulda's and shoulda's in my decisions prior to the accident today.

Anyways, I wanted to know if my fellow BBS bretheren have ever experienced any tough accidents in the past (god knows ya'll have experienced everything else!), and thought sharing it might raise my spirits a little. I've got a lot to do over the next few days, so I could use the confidence. That said, no need to fabricate a story just for my sake! [IMG]

I've had my license for about 4 months and although a couple of people have almost hit me I haven't had any accidents. [IMG]

I've been in 3 accidents in my life - 2 minor and 1 fairly serious.

The first two were fender benders, one that didn't even really do any damage to my truck that was the result of college kids, drunk in mommy's car not paying attention on the freeway. Their mom's Z28 was totalled. Ooops.

The other was me hitting a car from behind in my mom's car in high school. It was on the freeway near an exit and a car two in front of me slammed on its breaks so they could try to re-merge illegally onto the freeway. The car had VERY minor damage that cost about $100 to fix.

The last accident was in 1999. My wife and I were in a parking lot driving, perfectly legally, when an 18-year-old girl driving her brand new F150 slammed into the drivers side of my truck just behind the door. She had been at a stop sign and looked one way but not towards me until she was already on top of me. My truck was totalled.

In addition, my insurance company who came to the scene cleared me of any wrongdoing but her insurance company claimed it was 100% my fault. Police arrived but said they couldn't do anything because it was private property.

One of the police told me that the girl would have been ticketed for failing to yield the right of way had it been on a public street.

The capper? I had no collision insurance, only liability. My truck was destroyed while hers, according to the report, required about $500 in repairs. I never saw a penny. Fortunately, my truck was paid for. I ended up giving it to the salvage yard in return for the cost of storing it for 6 weeks while I tried to get insurance to pay for the damage. I even hired an attorney who blew me off.

Moral of the story: ALWAYS carry collision insurance.

praise jebus i dont drive! but my mom does and everyone in houston should watch out!!she drives a silver dodge intrepid...anyway ive been in so many car accidents its not even funny. i never got hurt that bad, but there was this one time when we were going out to my grandparents lake house. it was memorial day weekend and i was in the 6th grade i think. my dad was driving down some old farm road. my whole family was in the car. (my mom, dad, and two brothers) we were goin north and a car ran a stop sign and plowed into the side of us and we spun around twice and hit a car coming from the south. saddly to say two people(kids) died, because they werent wearing seat belts, and the car that hit us was ofcourse...full of drunk guys. no one in my family got hurt that bad, but i did have a huge bruise that almost covered my whole left cheek cause my head hit the drivers seat. good thing my parents always made me wear a seat belt. stuff like that doesnt make me look forward to driving myself around.

I've been in 2 minor accidents so far, and I've been driving for 3 years. First one, was stupid and I tapped this guy's bumper. He was stopped at a random location in the middle of an intersection, and I *ALMOST* stopped in time -- he never reported it to his insurance . . .

Second one was really dumb -- My friends and I had just left a club in SA, and we were getting food at Jack. This drunk guy then ran into the side of the car while we were sitting at the drive-through window . . . we chased him to a payphone and called the cops.

Neither time i had any damage (THE BLUE SUBURBAN IS ALL-POWERFUL!!!).

The first accident, i was a bit nervous driving after that, but just keep with it -- take it slowly for a while, and drive more defensively.

Woman drives car into pool after two accidents

An elderly South African woman had two car accidents within an hour - finally driving into a neighbour's pool.

Magda Trubshaw first pranged her car on her garage door.

Then, as she drove to the garage to have it repaired, she smashed through a neighbour's wall into a swimming pool.

The Cape Town resident said: "I had a really bad day. I was returning home from a friend's house when the first accident happened. I pulled my Daihatsu into the driveway and smashed into the garage door."

Then, setting off for the garage, she reversed out of her driveway.

She said: "The next thing I knew I was in the pool."

She added: "While going down I pressed a button and automatically closed all the windows to prevent water from gushing into the car."

Builders who heard her cries smashed a window to get her out, reports the IOL website.

Mrs Trubshaw, 77, escaped unscathed and said: "I'm all right, they fished me out. Thank God my dog Ziggie wasn't with me."

I have, thank God, had no accidents in my Accord, but my old Nissan Beater was a magnet for accidents.

Probably because I drove like an idiot but anyway...
    • I had a semi-major accident in August of 1996 when the Cadillac in front of the pickup truck I was very nearly tailgating had a blowout. The driver of the truck slammed on his breaks stopped, and I stopped too, but not until I'd rear-ended him and gashed up the Nissan's styrofoam-filled bumper (no, really) with his trailer hitch.
    • Two months later I pulled out of a parking spot in my company's parking lot without looking both ways and a Mustang that was cutting through the parking lot ran into me. My fault.
    • In January of 1999, while driving my brother to the dentist's office (in rush hour traffic), I had the one serious accident of my life. This was the point at which I became a good driver-- I do NOT mess around on the road anymore, because I almost killed myself and my brother.

I was on MOPAC, heading south, and wanted to exit at 35th. I was in the middle lane; traffic in the lane to my right and in the entrance/exit lane was moving much slower than my lane.

Like a dumbass, I decided that I would stay in the middle lane as long as possible, then zip over across the right lane into the exit lane. You see people do this all the time.

Unfortunately, sometimes as people are getting into the right lane, the car in front of them hits its brakes. That's what happened to me. I was going 60, looking over my right shoulder to see if I could finish getting over, when I caught the red brake lights in my peripheral vision.

In an instant, I thought I was going to rear-end the car in front of me. Instinctively, I leaned on the wheel and dodged right. I avoided the car in front of me but overcompensated in doing so and banged into the curb in the exit lane.

    That's when the trouble started.

Panicking and realizing I was too far right, I winched back to the left-- too hard, again. You could hear the tires screeching as I began to slide towards the right lane of traffic (which was now to my left). These cars were very nearly stopped at this point, and as my car slid towards them, I again cranked the wheel to the right to avoid them.

    Which I did.

Unfortunately, again, I was headed to the right. This time, though, I overdid it to the point of spinning. We went around once and struck the curb, then spun another 180 degrees, slid off into the grass, and smashed into a wooden fence (knocked out a half dozen boards).

We came thisclose to a) flipping over (in an SUV, I would have), b) hitting one of a dozen cars aroundme, c) causing an accident as people watched me careen around the highway.

I was lucky. Very, very, lucky, and although I have had a couple near misses since then (only one my fault, hee hee), I have not had an accident since.

Azim, God bless you and your sister. I'm glad you all are OK. [IMG]

Up here in D/FW at some lake close to Denton(Lake Lewisville I believe), some people were enjoying a day and evening at the lake. Well, some guy apparently let some other guy drive who didn't know how to drive. He must have thought he was in reverse so he floored it but he was really in forward. The car jumped...and I mean jumped like 15 feet in the air off of a road leading to the lake breaking through some small barricades. The car landed in the water right side up. There were like 6 people in the car and only one guy got out...the guy who let him drive. He was in the passenger seat. The rest of them all drowned as they couldn't get out. The car floated for a few minutes but in the panic I guess they couldn't make it. If you don't get out fast, then the pressure builds up and you have to wait for the car to become flooded and the pressure to equalize. Add panic to that and I can see how they wouldn't survive. The passenger guy survived because his window was already partially opened.

That is the biggest lake/car catastrophe I have ever seen. And that poor guy has to live with it. He lost his whole family. What I don't understand is why the guy floored it and why he was allowed to drive without a license? Mistakes like that can lead to catastrophe as they often do. It just doesn't seem like a very wise decision to do something like that.

I've never been in a serious car accident but I know it could happen to anyone at any time. All one can do is be careful. Unfortunately, alot of teenagers are to blame whether they are speeding, drinking, just got their license, or whatever. Older people don't help matters, either. I'm always dodging the old guy or lady who seem to swerve between lanes like they own the road but, in reality, they should not be driving. Old people always get in those situations where they cannot react either mentally or physically which often ends in catastrophe as well.

One of my best friends from my high school had an accident just like Azim's. He was trying to make a left turn across two lanes of traffic, one lane stopped to let him go, he couldn't see the other lane, gets T-boned by a car in the other lane.

    My best accident story:

I'm driving in a convoy of 4 cars to Jazzfest in New Orleans. I'm following my buddy, going 70mph on I-10.

My buddy switches into the far left lane (third lane), and I follow. My buddy realizes that the third lane is exit-only, so he switches back. I think to myself "I've only been in this lane for a couple of seconds, no need to check the blind spot", so I start changing lanes. About halfway through the change I checked my blind spot and saw a van occupying the lane.

So, I swerve too hard to the left, so I swerve too hard to the right, so I swerve too hard to the left, then back to the right.

I spun 360 degrees across all three lanes of I-10 traffic. Got a great view of oncoming traffic while facing the wrong way. I spin across the grass between the freeway and the access road. I end up at a dead stop facing the right way on the access road.

I missed a number of cars, narrowly missed hitting a road sign, would have flipped the car over if the grass hadn't been perfectly flat.

Then, still at a dead stop on the access road, I glance in my rearview mirror and see a pickup coming up behind me, skidding on my brakes. The pickup managed to stop about 6 feet from my rear bumper.

I start the car and pull off the access road at the first opportunity. Turns out to a church parking lot full of people who'd witnessed the whole thing. Turns out on of the people in the lot is the mother of the guy in the pickup who barely stopped behind me. The guy's mother runs over and hugs me as soon as I step out of the car. "Praise the Lord!" "Praise the Lord!"

We walked around the car and checked it out, no ill effects, not even a flat tire. So, we switched drivers and got back on the road.

going 70 mph, spinning across three lanes of I-10 traffice, spinning across the grass, stopping on the access road, no ill effects whatsoever

I got into an accident on Riverside. Some guy was coming out of the parking lot of Riverside Liquor. He smashed right into the passenger side of my car. The police gave him a ticket for some minor traffic offense. The dude was obviously drunk or high cause he kept mumbling to himself but APD didn't give him any tests. I lost all respect for APD that night. I was pretty shaken up after that and I stopped driving in Austin for several months.

Thanks a lot guys, that - and a good nights sleep - does make me feel better. Especially the Kagy, Vengeance and Surfguys stories. [IMG] I think I can put it behind me now and just learn from my mistakes and allow it to make me a more a cautious driver. My only worry now is that my sister's '99 Corolla gets better.

Thanks for the kind words BrianKagy, I appreciate it. [IMG] I'm also happy for you in that you have confided in your religion.

This year my junior year in high school I had two accidents in about a week span although neither was my fault. The first was over christmas break when I was in a parking lot and the person apparently did not see me as he backed out of his space. And he managed to back into the side of my car as i went down the lane. That was about a $1,000 bucks worth but his insurance luckily covered it. The 2nd was again not my fault. I was stopped getting ready to pull out into traffic in my school parking lot. The girl behind me totally wasn't paying attention or something and hit the back of me. Luckily that one didn't do to much damage. But it does shatter confidence a little and my parents were like two accidents in one week what are you doing lol. but anyways azim just relax and you will be fine. the one thing that keeps me driving slow is fear of my insurance going up. Dang that male under 25 discrimation is aweful!

Speaking of accidents, I almost lost my life today. If I wasn't defensive driving, then I would be history. It was on a circle where I was merging into the circle of traffic. This guy just plowed out of nowhere, ignore his YIELD sign, and would have plowed right into me on my driver side. He was going too fast for the circle like he and his buddy were in a hurry to get drunk or something. I even saw his buddy look at me...he knew what was up. The ******* driver ignored the sign while smoking his cigarette. I don't know why I stopped when I didn't have to yield. I usually keep going. But, I hesitated, thought the car was driving kind of suspiciously, and yielded to him. I stopped just in the nick of time. You always think their going to stop and they usually do but he didn't. Thank God I did. Man, that pisses me off. That prick should not be behind the wheel. I would have been splattered.

And, just after this thread as well. Bad omen. Whew.
