Again, why did Sura wait 3 months to have this scope? And why do we want JWill again? Seems that nobody else wants him, there must be a reason. At this point, Charlie Ward would probably be able to do more than JWIll.
I bet they start DA until Sura is better. I think DA is able to bring the ball up the court adequately. It might actually improve our defense. Wesley can switch to guarding PGs and DA can guard SGs. DA is taller and likely to guard SGs as well if not better than wesley. Some PGs might be too quick for DW but its likely they would be too quick for Sura as well. I think we will be fine with the depth we have right now (thanks CD!).
From Rockets.com Rockets’ Sura To Undergo Knee Surgery On Wednesday, September 28, the Rockets announced that guard Bob Sura will be having surgery to scope out the back part of his right knee on Thursday morning. On Wednesday afternoon, Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson spoke with media to further explain and clarify Sura's condition.. “Well, that’s not the picture I get from the doctors,” Dawson said when referencing Sura’s earlier statements. “I know he hurt his knee last year and he had it cleaned out this summer. I think there’s a small tear in the back, from what the doctors tell me, that we’re going to have taken care of tomorrow. They don’t think it’ll be more than a week, as far as slowing him down, and he’ll be back going at it again.” The 6’5”, 200-pound Sura averaged 10.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.3 assists in 61 games last season, his first as a Rocket. The ballclub became enamored with Sura’s gritty nature and tough style of play. He provided Houston with a versatile backcourt presence who could penetrate and snare every loose ball that came his way. “I love the guy,” Dawson said. “If there’s anybody that can come back fast and play again, it’s Bob Sura. He’s a competitor and he’s as tough as it gets. We’ll see what happens but we’re fully expecting him to play and be able to come back.” Sura also had an operation on the same knee earlier this summer, except it was done on the front part of his knee. Dawson mentioned that this upcoming operation will slow Sura down for approximately a week, and will do little else but slow down the rehab that was still ongoing for the front part of the knee. Sura’s absence left questions about whether the Rockets are strongly pursuing any immediate roster moves, which Dawson answered as well. “We’re always looking (at roster moves), but he’s been hurt all summer,” Dawson said. “It’s been a little bump in the road. It was the back part of the knee (that proved to be a problem) that we hadn’t anticipated, and I think that’s where the catch is. But we still have Mike James, we still have Moochie Norris. A lot of people might not realize this, but Luther (Head) played point guard in high school, so he’s very comfortable with the ball. So we’ve still got some guards. (David) Wesley can handle (the ball), Derek (Anderson) can handle. We’re still looking but we’re not going to just jump and do something because we’ve known about this for a long time.” Dawson emphasized the point that the Rockets had been aware of Sura’s situation for quite some time. Recent occurrences were hardly unexpected. The organization had actually been aware of the issues with the back part of Sura’s knee for more than two weeks. “He knows his knee better than anybody,” Dawson said. “But I know what a competitor he is. Let’s get the back part (of his knee) looked at, and then we’ll go from there. If there’s anybody in this league who can play when the going gets tough, it’s him. I’m optimistic about it because I know how tough he is and from what the doctors say, he still has some miles left in that knee.”
Let me start of by acknowledging that I am a big Sura fan! I think he was one of the players that contributed the most to our teams success last season, having said that I'm puzzled at the way some of our posters are overreacting to the news of Sura being operated again. I'll admit that he is probably the best guard that we have to run our offense but, if we we're solely relying on Sura to take us to the promised land then I could understand the hysteria but the truth is that we have a very good team with or without a healthy Sura. No I'm not ragging on Sura I like everything that he brings to the team especially his rebounding but with the addition of Swift I think our rebounding will greatly improve also I think that now that James has a half a season under his belt with the team his game will also improve. I know he has a scorers mentality but that could actually be a good thing in that whoever is guarding him will think twice about leaving him unguarded. I also think that JVG will not let him run loose and take too many ill-advised shots that can harm the teams chemistry. This team will only go as far as McGrady and Yao will take us, regardless I hope Sura returns healthy and as quickly as possible because he's definitely one of our better players.
so what did CD mean? He is only going to miss a week to recover? Or he means that its just going to push back his return a week more that they knew of? Sorry to start some shi... stuff....
It sounds like CD is saying that Sura is still recovering from the original surgery. However, because of this new operation, he will have to hold on the rehabilitation of the knee for about 1 week. So whatever, the time span for the 1st surgery is, then add one week for this 2nd operation.
How can nobody here ever mentioned the possibility of having Wesley play at the point? keep in mind that he used to be the starting PG for Charlotte Hornets and averaged more than 6 assists per game until Barron Davis took his PG position.... Given T-mac's ballhandling abilities I am sure Wesley will be able to nicely fill in the hole...... last year we couldn't move Wesley to the PG position because we didn't have any real SG... but now we got DA......
even though i'd love to have a healthy sura, i'd rather not rush him back either. two surgeries on the same knee in a span of a few months. granted the recent surgery doesn't sound as major, but i hope he doesn't rush the comeback.
All Mike James needs to do to be an OK starter is to play under control, within the system. It would be interesting to see what kind of role Luther can play and how he develops, also how well Wesley plays as a pg.
I didn't see this posted. Sort of no new information, but I thought it summmed the Sura situation up pretty well. Man I hope CD is right, I think Sura is real important to the Rockets. Sept. 29, 2005, 1:06AM Sura's future clouded Scheduled for knee surgery today, guard says career in jeopardy; Rockets disagree By JONATHAN FEIGEN Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle With his right knee so damaged that his doctor called it "a train wreck," Rockets point guard Bob Sura will undergo surgery today that he says could determine if he will ever play again. Sura, a key to the Rockets' 2004-05 turnaround when he came back from offseason back surgery, underwent arthroscopic surgery in May to clean out loose particles in the knee that pained him for much of last season. But he said the knee hasn't improved. "I'm going to undergo another knee surgery ... and don't know how it's going to respond," Sura said Wednesday. "I have some serious problems in there — arthritis and bone on bone and some cartilage damage — so I really don't know. I don't have a good answer. "I think that (the potential end of his career) is something I'm looking in the eye right now. Some problems you have in a knee just can't be fixed. Hopefully, I'll be able to get through another season or two, but I really don't know." Playing in knee and back pain most of last season, Sura, 32, averaged 10.3 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.2 assists. He had hoped the knee surgery would solve the health issues; instead, he has told teammates his return is in doubt. "He doesn't know what he's going to do," guard David Wesley said. "When you talk to him, he's not that confident he'll ever play again." A YEAR OF PAIN Bob Sura's medical history with the Rockets: • Sept. 21, 2004: Undergoes back surgery and misses the first 14 games of the season. • Dec. 18, 2004: Suffers a bruised right knee but plays through the injury. • Feb.-March 2005: Sits out seven games with back pain. • May 29, 2005: Has arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. • Today: Will have another operation on his right knee. Rockets officials are considerably more optimistic that the surgery will correct the lingering problems. "That's not the picture I get from the doctors," Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson said. "He hurt his knee last year, and we had it cleaned out this summer. It was going along pretty good, and now I think there's another tear in the back, a small tear that from what the doctors tell me we're going to have taken care of. It's a little flap (of cartilage). "They don't think it will be more than a week as far as slowing him down. I know what a competitor he is. He gets down, but if there's anybody that can come back fast and play again, it's Bob Sura. We're optimistic. I know he's down about it, but just talking to the doctors, they sound better about it than he does." After Sura said he would be out six to eight weeks, roughly the rehabilitation time the previous surgery required, Dawson said Sura could be cleared for full-speed work in 10 days and to play NBA games between mid-October and mid-November. Gives team spark Sura, who never had knee problems before last season, hoped the surgery would allow him to regain the athleticism and defensive quickness of much of his career. But even with Sura suffering often-severe knee and back pain, the Rockets were 42-17 with him starting at the point last season. "He is a key part of our team and what we accomplished last year," forward Tracy McGrady said. "When Bobby came to us last year, that's when we had a complete turnaround as far as the attitude of the team. He is our floor general that just leaves everything out on the basketball floor for us. "To hear that he won't be here at the start of the season for us is bad news." Dawson said the pursuit of a point guard has not become more urgent because of Sura's condition. The Rockets have 16 players signed to guaranteed contracts and are over the luxury-tax threshold, making it more likely they would wait to determine Sura's condition than rush after a free-agent point guard such as Howard Eisley or Erick Strickland. Mike James, who became Sura's primary backup after he was acquired in February, Moochie Norris and rookie Luther Head could all work at the point with Sura out, Dawson said. The Rockets could also play Derek Anderson, with Wesley matching up defensively against point guards and McGrady handling much of the playmaking duties that typically fall to point guards. Power forward Juwan Howard, who hurt his right knee in March and missed the end of last season because of a heart condition, said Wednesday he is completely cleared for this season and in no danger. Ready to play "I'm doing fine," Howard said. "I feel great. I'm ready to go and start a healthy basketball season. My agent and I ... went to some of the top medical centers in the country ... and saw some of the top cardiologists in the country. They reaffirmed that I have a clean bill of health, and I'm ready to go out and perform." The Rockets can only hope Sura comes back as well, even if he isn't so sure. "It's really difficult because of the kind of team we have, a championship-caliber team, some great guys and a chance to do something really special, and I really want to be a part of it," Sura said. "So to face the possibility of that not happening is pretty painful. "With the knee, it's something you have to look at long-term — coming down to the end of my career anyway. I don't want to be in a wheelchair 10 years from now trying to get around. There's some tough decisions to be made." jonathan.feigen@chron.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ROCKETS SUMMARY Ward weighs options Rockets guard Charlie Ward said Wednesday he has spoken to the team about assuming another position with the franchise but that he would first try to come back as a player when training camp begins next week. Ward played in just 14 games before missing the rest of last season after surgery on his right knee. "I'm doing well, as well as expected," Ward said. "I'm going to prepare to try to participate and see how it goes from there. I've been doing minor court drills, but I haven't been playing. I'm not where I would be normally, but I'm much better than I was last year. "That (a position with the team if he can't play) is to be determined. I'm proceeding with training camp and working to try to play this year." Glover may be invited Dion Glover, one of the stars of the Rockets' summer league team, could soon get an invitation to training camp with a chance to make it back to the NBA. Glover, former Kentucky forward Chuck Hayes (who also played well in Minneapolis in July) and former Kansas forward Keith Langford all took physicals Wednesday and could be signed to non-guaranteed contracts in time for the start of practices Tuesday. Glover, a 6-5 forward/guard, has averaged 8.2 points and 3.1 rebounds in six NBA seasons, including several productive years with the Atlanta Hawks. "I think all three will be signed," general manager Carroll Dawson said. "They (Glover and Hayes) know the system and will fill in well." Clinics canceled The Rockets canceled their coaches, trainers and strength trainers clinics scheduled for Sunday because of Hurricane Rita. JONATHAN FEIGEN
Lance on the morning show on 610 was saying that Sura's career maybe over. pure speculation but this is very bad news for him.
Guys for a great example of how good Sura played for us last season. Go back and find every player last year that averaged at least 10 points 5 rebounds and 5 assists per game. Bobby Sura Tracy McGrady Kevin Garnett Dwayne Wade Lebron James Steve Francis Jason Kidd Kobe Bryant thats it just 8 players with 2 on the Rockets although that does also speak of how poor our rebounding was last year, yet still Sura is the only player on that list that isn't a perienal all star. It will be a shame to lose his production and the reason i and others are clamoring for Jay Will is because he is the only PG out there with as much upside to either put him into an all star game or make a significant difference if he can shake off the injury.
Great post! Sura's position for the team reminds me of Mario Elie. Neither is the superstar. But they have grit, fire, determination... they bring intangibles to the game, they quietly have good numbers. I hope Sura's just foolin' around and will be fine. I'd like to see him on the floor and playing his best game. I don't know if ANY of his time with the rockets has shown us his best game because of all the injuries he's had.
