Finally, finally it is here! I'm not showing up at the movie theater wearing a brown coat or anything, but I may swear in Chinese just to get the mood going. For the uninitiated, Serenity is based on a great, but short-lived TV series called Firefly, which was developed by Joss Whedon (creator of Angel and Buffy). Like Buffy and Angel, Firefly has great ensemble chemistry, unexpected humor, and cliche-breaking plotlines. Bad guys actually get killed. Good guys actually do bad things. And no one turns down a free session with a w****.
I'm definitely seeing it open weekend. Should be a great show. It looks like they even splurged on top rate special effects.
I am. I didn't watch the show at first because I really hated Buffy. I got a little curious, but then the show was canceled. A while ago, I started reading Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men comics and my interest was piqued again and I watched a few eps on Sci-fi. Needless to say, I thought the show was pretty damn good from the 2 eps I'd seen. I was hoping I could get the box set before the movie came out, but I've waited too long. There was also a marathon yesterday, but I missed it.
You da man Dakota! We need more converts! If the film does well, we'll get a sequel. If it does spectacularly, maybe, just maybe, a mini series on SciFi!
I'll be seeing it, but not opening weekend. I've watched one episode in the box set and me and the wife want to watch the rest before seeing it.
Joss Whedon is a genius. I loved Buffy, I loved Firefly, I really liked Angel (not a huge fan of David Boreanaz). I bought them all on DVD. I will be seeing Serenity for the first time on Friday. I can't wait for Wonder Woman. Hopefully something becomes of Joss's idea for a Spike project. Yeah, I'm excited.
RM95....you will love it.....just wait until episode 3 or so, and you will be hooked, and then saddened by the fact that after episode 14 there is no more.
Some of ya'll are pretty excited about this movie. I can't really say anything since all I know is what I've seen on the commericials. It does seem like a WB movie though.
Yeah, the series will get better and better. My favorite episodes were Jayne's Town and Our Mrs. Reynolds. That's how I feel, too. Maybe it is not Boreanaz I dislike, but just the whole concept of a brooding and stoic vampire that makes Angel unattractive. I really love the chemistry between the cast. Wes, Cordy, Gunn, and Fred really make the show worth watching despite the flat title character.
I can't wait. I borrowed the DVD's from a friend and watched them all in one weekend. Its my favorite sci-fi series.
"My love for me now ain't hard to explain. The Hero of Canton, the man they call...Meeeee!" - Jayne I heard a rumor that if the movie did well, Sci Fi would start doing new episodes. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this?
I'll definately see it but it sucks that we didn't get the entire setup that the series was starting to unfold. It appears that sister that the "Enterprise" (know that is not what their) called is an absolute ass kicker, Milla in resident evil style, well in the show she was just a shy kid, a mystery yet to be revealed. Oh well, the movie looks awesome, just wish they would have started from closer to where the series ended but I guess there was no real way to do it that way.
This Review sold me on it. I agree with the reviewer that the series was campy in a way- why have such a blatent western theme? It's not really nesasary to feel like a western to be a western.
I think Joss wrote a comic that bridges the gap between the series and the movie. You can read a short 5 page preview of the comic here: http://www.darkhorse.com/profile/preview.php?theid=10-845&p=1 Yeah, seeing River kick ass, while entertaining, is a bit of a shock. We always knew she was "special," but it would've been nice if we had a season or two to discover that instead of a two hour movie. Oh well. Must amp things up for the movie I suppose.
Yes folks. If you go to the movie you'll see a bunch of people wearing brown shirts and quoting the best lines of the series back and forth with each other. But it'll be worth it, I swear.
There were hints that River had special killing abilities in one of the episodes ("War Stories", the one where they try to rescue Mal and Wash).
