When measuring intelligence, the definition is incredibly important... especially since cats and dogs don't fit into normal human standards.

From what I understand, cats have greater problem-solving capabilities. As a non-herd animal, they've developed better intrapersonal methods of attaining necessities. So, cats can recognize a difficulty, and solve it more easily.

Dogs are more useful, because as pack animals, they've developed such characteristics as loyalty, and trained behavior (in adapting to others). Do you consider being useful a sign of intelligence? Maybe, but perhaps not.

Since cats *seem* to have greater pure cognitive capabilities, I'd vote for them. But it's not open and shut like I probably sounded like. Just displaying a little personal bias.

Do a google search... it's a hot internet topic, to my surprise [IMG].

Anybody see the special on eating dog. It's actually legal in all but 5 states. You can actually drink dog juice and eat dog meat. sicko. In Korea, about 5% of population still eats it on a regular basis. It's some sort of delicacy.... They banned it during the olympics. In Virgiia, the news team had to buy it from the back of van even though it's legal....no dirty jokes about liking to eat 'kitty' please.

Dogs aren't much more effort. All you have to do is tie it to a tree. If you're smart about it, the tree doesn't even have to be in your yard... just give him enough slack to eat the next door neighbor's dog food and to hit the ditch too for water.

The only bad thing about dogs is that they stink. Oh yeah, and that they don't bring you gifts. Oh yeah, and that they're emotionally shallow. [IMG]

You can't go wrong with Dachsunds, Tex. They have the vertical of Matt Bullard. Plus they are loving, and most of them are quite smart.

    What's up dog?

I am allergic to cats, so I am not going to get involved here. Cats ARE more maintenance free, but I digress.

I had a Dachsund for years, the best dog I have ever been around. She really didn't like the neighborhood kids and would chase them around. Very easy to care for, just let her in the backyard for a couple hours a day and walk her when the mood hit me. The only problem was that she loved to eat leather goods, so my mom had to spend a lot of money on replacement shoes and baseball mitts.

I've come to like cats significantly more now because my girlfriend is a cat lover. She gets upset when people try to convince her that animals don't have souls or go to heaven. I've definitely been "trained" to like cats. Kind of like a dog. Or a cat. Or whatever. [IMG] Dogs are cool, too, although you get more slobber with dogs. I'm not a big fan of slobber myself.

    rottweilers are evil.

No you didn't just say that did you Outlaw?

I personally find that statement to be offensive and racist against Rottweilers!

But for real, you are so wrong. Rotties are not mean by nature. It's the evil owners that make them into mean animals. They are so loving. They long to always be near you. My rottie just turned 1 and he already weighs 110 pounds. Is he eeeevil? No. Is he potentially dangerous? Yes, but only because he is a puppy who thinks he still weighs 13 pounds. He can knock you down with ease, but not because he wants to hurt you. He just wants to play. He will mature and he will grow out of his "i'm-still-a-puppy" phase.

    rockHEAD,
We seem to have more and more in common. One day we need to light one up, talk Rockets, and let the dogs play!

    I hear ya SpaceCity.

My Rott is 3 and she's the sweetest dog.

It is the owners that have a lot to do with the way their dogs behave. If you don't give them the love and training they need or let them be inside with you as part of the family, there can be serious repurcussions. Rotties that are left chained up in a yard or left to wander the fence in a used car lot will always be aggressive because they are not loved nor are they given the attention they deserve. Rotties have been given a bad rap because some of the people that own them are ignorant. We have one that lives across the street from us. He's about 1.5 and just stays tied up all day long! And he's behind a fence. The owner never plays with him or gives him the love he deserves. It's so sad. I want to just steal him and let him be part of our family. Owners are evil, not the dogs!

Anyway... please don't assume all Rotts are evil cause they aren't. Bad owners=Bad dogs!
