I broke down and bought a new CD Writer today. My old one (Memorex 1622 2x2x8) was dying a slow death; it would only be successful about 30% of the time, and was getting progressively worse, so it was time for a change. Anyway, I got an excellent deal if I do say so myself. It's a Panasonic 8x4x32 and I got it for only $119.95 at a local computer store (that's Canadian dollars, mind you). It's sweet. No more buffer underruns. No more wasting time burning a CD at 1x speed because 2x speed gives choppy audio; 8x speed gives perfect quality sound. Before, burning a CD was a major 1.5 hour job. Now, it's just a simple 10 minute thing, like running virus-scan or something. Anyway, I love my new toy and felt the need to brag to strangers for a bit. Hooray, hooray. ------------------ My dream job is to be a Houston Rockets towel boy.
Where did you get it? I live in Calgary, so if it's a national promotion, it may be available here too. If so, I'll run out and get one right now … ------------------
I doubt it. I grabbed it at a local store in Newfoundland. ------------------ My dream job is to be a Houston Rockets towel boy.
My Sony Spressa USB has recently died. It was worthless to begin with. It was shipped with drivers and software that didn't even work. I had to do a ton of research just to get my computer to recognize the damn thing. Now it doesn't even recognize it anymore. I have re-installed all software with no luck. So I'm gonna be on the lookout for a new CDR... fadeaway recommended his Panasonic.. what do you other bbs'ers recommend?? rH ------------------ visit: The Psychedelic Groove House of Rockets Basketball Love!
I recently got a 12x10x32 from QPS. It rocks! I've had slower one's for my studio, but this is the first just for my computer. So much easier than making tape compilations for driving, exercising, etc. I'm impressed by the sound quality although, under careful scrutiny, it is rather different from the original. Since I'm not using them for critical listening, I could care less! ------------------ The internet is about the free exchange and sale of other people's ideas. - Futurama
I have an HP USB 4x (model: 8230e) I was forced to get an external one because I use a laptop all the time. Now since I have cable it's great. hehe Sorry Jeff I'm cheap ------------------ ~John~ Help keep the obsessed thread alive post the reasons why you are an obsessed Rockets fan by clicking here
rockHEAD, Buy a Plextor or Yamaha. Many of the other companies just rebadge both of these companies' drives anyway. Teac also makes a good drive, but I'm not sure if it's rebadged or not. You should be able to get good deals on 16x10x40 or 12x10x32 drives (depending on what you think a good deal is... hehe). ------------------ NBA Draft Lottery is May 20th. Start praying now.
DOD: Just a note. Might be hard to find a decent fast Plextor. The guy at QPS told me that they are "re-evaluating their market position" - roughly translated: considering bailing from the CDR market. I have a Teac mechanism in mine and it is great. ------------------ The internet is about the free exchange and sale of other people's ideas. - Futurama
I've had my Yamaha for about 9 months now, and NO PROBLEMS whatsoever. I *love* it. ------------------ "Up and down, inside out, outside in, some you lose some you win" -- DMB -> "Sweet Up and Down"
Yeah there have been rumors of Plextor getting out of the business have been around since last year, but if they get out of the business, what else will they do? They don't do much else but make CD's and CD-R's. I hope they do stick around because their drives and support are the best in the world of CD ROMs and CD-RWs. BTW, the same thing has been said about TDK in the past. ------------------ NBA Draft Lottery is May 20th. Start praying now.
I know it has been rumored, but the guy at QPS told me they were unable to even buy CDR mechanisms from Plextor now. I wanted one because they are compatible with every piece of software (music, etc) that I have and some of the others aren't. I ended up with a Teac that works with some of the software but not all of it yet. I've been informed that future upgrades will address my software issues, so I'm ok for now. ------------------ The internet is about the free exchange and sale of other people's ideas. - Futurama
Yes. IDE is the standard. SCSI requires a seperate SCSI card to get it to work. ------------------ All hail Fadeaway's Cyberfish -- your 2000-2001 BobFinn* Fantasy Basketball League Champions!
thanks fade... thats what i had thought. rH ------------------ visit: The Psychedelic Groove House of Rockets Basketball Love!
Try to get one with some type of "Burn Proof" technology built into it. It goes by several different names, but it basically makes it difficult to screw up a disc due to buffer underruns. Make sure what you have is IDE. It more than likely is. You can have a SCSI device with no card if the motherboard has SCSI built into it. I'm still guessing you have a 40 pin IDE drive (start countin' ya bastid! ). ------------------ NBA Draft Lottery is May 20th. Start praying now.
OK, so I wanna get a new CDR, if I get an internal one, to replace my CD-ROM, is that typically IDE (not SCSI)?? rH ------------------ visit: The Psychedelic Groove House of Rockets Basketball Love!
