Most nations can't be united; how are you going to unite the WORLD under one government?

Our Republican form of government is an EXPRESSION of our founding peoples' character, beliefs, lessons-learned and aspirations.

Government should not be, as much as possible, an IMPOSITION (ours has stepped over that line; that's why so many of us are slapping it back) on a nation's people.

What's better to have self-discipline or discipline?

haven - republican government is imperfect..as all forms of government are because they're man-made institutions. But I still feel it's the best form possible.

I also do not feel that our problems as mankind will be shared enough to warrant a worldwide government. The lifestyles and cultures of nations around the world are so different and diverse that it seems highly impractical. And ultimately, how would you set it up?? Who would carry out the executive power...because I guarantee you, it's one thing to accept the rule of a democrat from arkansas...quite another to accept rule from an administration run by someone from another country.

Again...government and law is a reflection of the culture of the society. Japan is a culture that is deeply affected by its huge population, but very limited resources. Its government reflects a deep communitarian spirit, where the society is deemed more important than individuals. Ours is a vastly different culture. Trying to mesh our legal systems together would be laughable. Who here would enjoy standing trial for a crime in that country as compared to here?? Not that our legal system is walk-in-the-park for criminal defendants, but they are entitled to some rights which the rest of the world doesn't respect. I don't see our desire for those rights decreasing or the rest of the world's hunger for those rights increasing. For all the "It's a Small World" and "we're really all alike" talk, there are some very different ideas on how we are to be governed and live in society from culture to culture. And quite frankly, that makes the world interesting. I don't want a homogenous world where culture becomes blurred out across the world.

Republican as in "republic" -- see Plato, I guess. I apologize for the misleading capitalization.

You are welcome to take off on word play and voice any opinion that you have urge to. This is all in fun; we're not being graded are we?!

Oh yeah, Democrats are going to destroy this country if they don't watch out.

I like a government that does for us what we can't do for ourselves NOT to do for us what we don't do for ourselves. Is that oversimplified?

It will occur gradually. But it's probably inevitable, eventually. Government occurs at the level necessary to deal with the primary issues confronting a community, at the level that social infrastructure is able tos upport.

As infrastructure (social and economic) expands, and problems become global, a global government becomes inevitable and necessary. This probably won't happen as expected; it's more likely that institutions will be created to deal with specific problems, and will gradually assume more responsibilities.

Oh, and current Republican government is an idiotic, pathetic, uninformed farce [IMG] (just didn't want you to get away with that!).
