[Argument] - Is Cheerleading a Sport?

We are going to need to see her picture before we can decide.

If she's hot I'm voting yes.

If she's not...

 

IMO, if its the typical Rah Rah crap, then no, but if its competitive, then yes...Hell, just look at this...

Bingo. It's not a sport. There's no shame in that, and I don't know why the label is so important to so many people... but it's not a sport.

 

Not a sport. Where's the ball... oh, never mind, MALE cheerleaders.

Still not a sport. Competition, not sport.

 

Definition of sport:

an active diversion requiring physical exertion and competition

Judging from the definition of sport.....I still say yes.

Personally I define sport as any competition that requires a high level of physical fitness to take part and excel in. By that definition competitive cheer is a sport.

 

With all sports I could take a friend of mine and go out and play right now.

Basketball: go to the gym and play pickup.
Football/Soccer/Baseball: grab some friends and head out to the field/diamond.
Golf (despite the bias here): go and play 9 with my roommate.


Could I get a couple of my buddies and the girls from next door to go down to the park with me and "play" cheerleading? Not without looking like a complete idiot...


I agree that it is more of a "competition" than a sport. I also tend to think that sports have a more concrete scoring system and winners/losers based on that system. Cheerleading and other competitions that involve judges can be flawed as to who the winner/loser is.

And no, my opinion has nothing to do with cheerleading being generally a female endeavor.

 

For those of you who think it is a competition and not a sport check the definition of sport:

 

I am positive that there is a concrete set of rules or scoring system when it comes to judging cheerleading.

 

So five judges watching a routine would all come up with the exact same score?

Who says you don't look like a complete idiot playing Basketball, Football, Baseball or Soccer. While I have no idea what your physical abilities are, but I really doubt that you have a large group of friends that are knowledgable enough about any of those sports to play anyone of them without looking stupid as a whole.
