ESPN is reporting that apparently Darryl Strawberry has been kidnapped. Supposedly Straw failed to report to the rehab clinic where he has been staying. A ranson call has been placed to friends for $50,000.

I heard about this yesterday I think, but I thought they said he had just "escaped" from the rehab facility. Wow. That is one strange life he's been leading. [IMG]

Wow? I wonder if its just made up to give Darryl more time to get high. This guy is as bad as Robert Downey, Jr. . They should put these guys in rehab together.

If he really did get kidnapped and is not hiding out in some crack house somewhere, then I hope he is going to be okay. Play along and give the kidnappers the $50K. I'm sure it will be marked somehow and they will get caught eventually. To the kidnappers, you are stupid and you will never get away with it! To Darryl if this is some kind of hoax to buy time to get high some more, shame on you and I think your trash! Either way....get a life, Darryl! I'm sick of hearing about your relapsing ass. Baseball had been very, very good to you. What did you do? Snorted it all away. That's sorry man. Try taking an 8 to 5 day job....you wouldn't last 10 minutes. Of the handful of people to make it to the big leagues, you had to be one of them. That just blows. You were good, too.

I was thinking the same thing. The ransom call was supposedly taken by a friend of Doc Gooden's. The two of them and another man have been looking for him all weekend, then the kidnapping "story" comes out.

It could also be a pre-emptive excuse for why he left in the first place, a ploy to keep him out of prison.

You beat me to it. It is exactly what I was thinking when I saw it. It sounded kinda fishy that they happened to call his best friend and say "we want $50,000". If it is true then I hope everything turns out ok. But it seems to me like it is just a ploy to try and keep himself out of jail. If this is the case then he really needs to be locked up.

Yeah, Darryl Strawberry was kidnapped. Just like Russell Crowe was almost kidnapped right before the Academy Awards, Yeah, huh, riiight...

DAR-RYL is holed up in a closet with a crackpipe, reliving the Shea Stadium cheers in his own special way.

Darryl is going to show up sometime in the next few days, stoned out of his mind, and exclaim in an all too loud voice, "April Fools!"

Update: He's been arrested at a Florida hospital.
    http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap/20010403/sp/bbo_strawberry_7.html

Tuesday April 3 4:33 AM ET
    Strawberry Arrested at Hospital
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Darryl Strawberry's latest absence from a drug treatment center ended with the former New York Yankees slugger's arrest at a hospital.

Strawberry was taken into custody at St. Joseph's Hospital on Monday night, four days after he left the Health Care Connection, a drug treatment center in Tampa. He was charged with violating a probation warrant, Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.

First word that Strawberry was safe came from Ray Negron, a Cleveland Indians consultant who advised the former player when he played for the Yankees.

``The search is over and Darryl is OK,'' Negron said about two hours before Strawberry was arrested. ``We've put him in a hospital to make sure he's taken care of.''

Further details on Strawberry's disappearance were not known.

The 39-year-old Strawberry, who is also being treated for colon cancer, was wearing an electronic monitor as a sentence for his 1999 arrest on drug and solicitation of prostitution charges. The monitor showed he had left, but did not indicate where he had gone.

Earlier Monday, police had said they were investigating an unconfirmed report that Strawberry was kidnapped and being held in Orlando, where his captors were demanding $50,000.

Prosecutors had said they would seek a prison sentence for Strawberry once he was located.

Strawberry also disappeared from the center in October. He left with a friend for an overnight drug binge but turned himself in the next day.

If it is determined that Strawberry broke house arrest by leaving the center Thursday, it will be the fourth time he has violated conditions imposed by a judge.

The judge has kept Strawberry out of prison so he can seek treatment for his addiction and cancer.

What an absolute waste of a life and talent, it is disgusting. Thankfully up to this point his habit hasn't caused serious injury to himself or other people. It is time to lock the guy up and throw away the key, for a long time at least. The guy is incapable of accepting help.

    Another update

That judge is a freaking joke! Last year she tells Strawberry that if he slips again, he's going to jail, well he slipped and he's not going to jail.

This ruling really angers me because Strawberry's had dozens of seconds chances and he's been "at bat at the bottom of the ninth with two strikes" many times before this time.

I realize that fighting drug addiction and cancer must be really difficult, but if this dude couldn't hit a homerun in the major league, I seriously doubt he would be getting yet another chance.

I was just about to post the update myself.
I couldn't agree more BGM if it were you or me we would be in prison for a good while. I have a cousin in a similar situation as Straw's. He was first sentenced to stay at a hospital. He did the same thing as Daryl by leaving one night and missing curfew. When he went back to court they sentenced him to 15 months which he is currently serving. He got one strike and was out. I am not pleading for my leniency for my cousin because I feel he got what he deserved. I can empathize with Strawberry and understand that it is a difficult habit to break but I have litte respect for the judge who keeps saying I am just gonna slap you on the wrist this time but next time I am gonna lower the boom. Then next time she says the same thing.

I am not worried however because I think he will probably end up doing the same thing again and if there is a next time hopefully she will put him out.
