I must admit that I am impressed with Mayor White

What do you think is the possibility of him becoming Governor White?

It depends on how many terms governor Friedman decides to serve.

As an admitted Republican loyalist I happily support this man as mayor or any other capacity in which he serves. I had the pleasure to have a dinner in which I sat between Mr. White and Mr. Sanchez and was more impressed with the conversation from White than his opponent. Of course it is petty but Orlando did not make eye contact when talking while White was genuine and thoughtful in a casual conversation. They were equally, if not over-the-top, cordial with each other.

    You know
I NEVER knew how important the eye contact thing was with people
until college .. . it is a cultural thing

Bill White is living proof that politics does not have to be divisive, polarized, hystrionic, and cloaked in ideology.

The man simply gets things done. Period.

I wish he would run for President. The country needs someone as President who cut through the crap and can get things done the way Bill White does for the city of Houston.

It is so important. I can give you a list of athletes that I have met and there is a very distinguished line between the eye-contact and the dismissive ones.

    Eye contact:
    Jon Barry
    Steve Francis
    T-Mac
    Steve McKinney
    The Rocket
    Biggio
    Magic
    Dikembe

    Dismissive:
    Cuttino
    Shaq
    Tony Banks
    Carr

Now these are people with which I have had multiple encounters and drawn this conclusion. It could have been bad timing and all that but that's my take.

Not to derail my own thread. . but
I was in college when the issue came up
We were at the MLK committee meeting . .. and it was toward the end
and we were talking about misconceptions and cultural
    Differences

White Guy: why do black folx look down and away when ever I speak with them? Is it a hold over from slavery.

My head snapped. . .and asked. . WHAT DO YOU MEAN?

he answers that it was something he noticed . .. I told him I don't do it ..
    and never noticed it . .. .

While I did not do that particular thing . . . i did have a hard time looking
folx in the eye . .. It feels like. . .a challenge in a sense
Staring/Giving the Evil eye . .. .was consider disrespectful with my Grandfather

You learned not to do it . .. period

I have corrected this habit. . .and it was not easy
I still get uneasy it the eye contact is too long. . .
I am making sure my son does not learn this all
I always tell him to look me in the eyes

He is not verbose and showy
    he just does it.

He has a plan . .and he moves on it
    not alot of rhetoric

As I mentioned in another thread..

I had the chance to work as an intern in the Mayor's Office this summer.

Those people work very hard to get the job done for the taxpayers of Houston.

Your political affiliation doesn't seem to matter as much at the local level it seems.. since you usually aren't making as big of political changes (not going to be having a big role in abortion issues etc)... it seems to be about getting the job done for your city.

I'm proud to be able to list his office on my resume.. and even prouder to be able to have a recommendation letter :)

I could see him as Governor.. he could play up his time at UT law to all the longhorn fans in the state while running...
