I don't agree with sending down Quintero at all. I think he's alot better than Chavez.

Quintero can't be called up again for 10 days. This sucks, if Ausmus or Chavez get hurt, the Astros will have no backup catcher for the playoffs. Also the 40 man roster is filled now. If they want to create room on the roster for a Jimmy Anderson or Scott Strickland, they would probley take cut Travis Driskill or Tommy Whiteman. Does anybody know since Fernando Nieve, Carlos Hernandez, and Mark McLemore are all out for they year, can they be placed on the 60 day DL? I don't think they can because there are not on the major league roster. But if they can, the would be good since they would have 3 extra spots.

Actually I am pretty sure they can be called up tomorrow. They would be considered September call ups. The reason the Astros did this is so that Gipson and Chavez would be elligible for the post season roster. Quintero and Burns already qualify for the post season roster. Also even if they couldn't call up Quintero for 10 days that rule can be waived if he replaces an injured player. There is also a contingency plan in the playoffs. Rosters are set for each series. If an injury occurs during the playoffs and the Astros move on, they can replace the injured player with someone else that qualifies for the playoff roster for the next series.

Question: How often do teams carry 3 full-time catchers on their playoff roster? Answer: Almost never.

An edit above. According to Astros.com Quint and Burns will return after the AAA season ends on September 5th. Carlos Hernandez has also been labeled as a maybe for the post season but only if he is healthy. He has a quad problem but it is not as bad as they originally thought.

Good question, why would the Astros call up a 60 year white newsguy anyway?

Quintero and Burns are not eligible for the playoff roster. Only the 25 man on the roster Wednesday and Backe, Bagwell are eligible. Thats why you should have 3 catchers on August 31 as insurance. So if Ausmus or Chavez get hurt, we will have only one catcher for the postseason.

No I don't realize that. St. Louis, Atlanta, NY Mets, San Diego, LA Angels all had three catchers on their roster before Sept.1.

From that link, you can click to all the rosters. Atlanta, San Diego, and LAA all have 2 catchers on their roster. St. Louis has 3, because they've all been injured all season and can't count on anybody. NYM have 3 because one was called up for a few days due to an emergency need and went nuts offensively and is now their everyday first baseman. He has not played catcher once for the Mets and is not there to be a catcher for that team.

LAA has Bengie Molina, Jose Molina, and Josh Paul(DL). They have kept there 3 catcher all year. St.Louis just recalled Mike Mahoney so he would be eligible for the playoffs, not because of injuries. San Diego has David Ross, Miguel Olivo, and Robet Fick. Mets have Mike Pizza (DL), Mike DiFelice, Ramon Castro, and Mike Jacobs. Atlanta has Johnny Estrada, Brian McCann, and Brayan Pena.

Biggio an Lamb are better hitters than any other catcher the astros can bring up so no 3rd catcher is needed the true spot the astros need help in is the outfield .They called up Gibson for speed & defense that may just be the missing part to this team his a better hitter than Bruke ans a better outfielder.
