Gas Strike September 5th. I got this forwarded to me at work, and then got an email sent out by our Assistant Director asking us to send it to as many people as possible. Normally I think these things are a pointless waste of time, but if he is sending this stuff out it must be serious. Anyway, here is the email: >>Subject: FW: Gas Strike SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 5TH PLEASE PASS ON THIS DATE At this point I will try anything ya'll!!!! Gas almost $3.00 I remember when that was all I put in my tank!!!!! To get form A to B. Carla I hope you will consider taking a stand as a consumer, and make an impact on our gas pricing. We have plenty of gas in stock, yet the media being manipulated by the suppliers would have you think otherwise. So lets pass this on and at least make an attempt to show we are tired of getting ramrodded!! Nationwide Strike Against High Gas Prices September 5th, 2005 Will Be The day for ALL AMERICANS to stand up against HIGH Gas prices!!!! NO ONE SHOULD BUY GAS ON THIS DAY!!!! But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of gas buyers. It's really simple to do. Now, don't wimp out at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!! I'm sending this note to about thirty people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ...and so on,! by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it ..... THREE H!UNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!! Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. How long would all that take? If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten more people within one day, all 300! MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next eight days! This is imperitive for everyone to participate to show the government (who is making a huge profit from us) that we are not going to stand for this!!! PLEASE PARTICIPATE IN THIS STRIKE I can't say I think this is going to work, but not buying gas for 1 day definitely isn't going to kill me. Pugs
Bogus. If people stopped buying gas for one day the effect would be minimal. If it were at all possible, which it is not, we should try not buying gas for several months.
why not just call it gas conversation? i guess this is just supposed to appeal to the populist in all of us by making it sound as if we are sticking it to the oil companies. either way you'll have to buy the gas whether it's today or tomorrow
How about a permanent boycott? That would actually bring prices down, unlike one-day symbollic boycotts that show, we want change but we don't really care to put forth any effort to make it happen.
This has been passed around since 1999. It's bogus. http://www.snopes.com/politics/gasoline/nogas.asp
I got one of these too and in general, it would help if it were more than one day, but the majority of us cannot as we have to get to and from work/home...The one I got mentioned specific stations that do not import oil from Saudi...From what I remember the majority of the companies do, but I remember BP and Conoco do not...
There is also a variation of this going around that sounded interesting, but it had to do with avoiding just one or two of the biggest suppliers. Still, it would seem next to impossible to get enough people to truly have an effect.
The problem with a gas strike or a strike on an essential item is that you will still buy the item. Even if everyone didn't buy gas that day, they would have bought it the previous day or the following day, giving the gas company the exact same revenues. For a strike on gas to be truly effective you must find ways to cut your gas usage drastically. Carpool as often as possible, join a vanpool program, go out less often, use public transportation, make sure your next car is fuel efficient, etc. These solutions take time, but they are a long term way to handle increasing gas prices. I have changed my driving habits, and now gas has to go up to $8 a gallon for me to pay the same as I was paying with my old driving habits at $2 a gallon. Speaking of carpooling, do you have half season plan B again this year pugs? I would like to carpool more often to games if you are interested. B
I agree with this 100%. The change has to be made long term and cannot make much, if any, difference in one day. I was thinking about switching jobs, but because they pay for my bus pass, that alone is tempting me to stay. Filling up my car twice a month is much better than filling up 5-6 times per month. I think we do have plan B again, but our biggest problem is we go very early to get front/free parking. Often times we wait outside 15-20 minutes before the game starts. If that's ok, then I don't see any problems. I'd love to carpool more as well. Pugs I don't know why I still think it's August......
I cannot believe anyone falls for this. I get it at least once a year. When you forwarded it to someone, did Bill Gates mail you a check, too?
Funny how you mention getting to the games early. Now that I am taking a vanpool to work I get dropped off at 45 and Beltway 8 around 5:15. We could meet there and carpool to the games, get free parking and never miss out on a promotion since we'll be one of the first ones there. B
If all of you guys don't forward this to 7 people in 5 minutes, something bad is going to happen. But if you do, something very good will happen, and you will experience riches and glory beyond human understanding. Something like that anyway.....
No kidding. Toby still is clinging to life. Sure, we were able to save him from his earlier fate, but now we should, nay, we must, purchase 100,000 copies of his book, or Toby is scheduled to bu butchered again. www.savetoby.com
