With tensions running high, and the summer dragging on. The way the bush administration handles anti war demonstrators and the building of the war supporters groups to counter the anti war people. We've seen the borderline violence in Crawford with the rednecks shooting off their guns for "dove hunting" practice and running over war memorials. Now there is a march of war supporters from California heading to Crawford for the weekend to confront Cindy.

Does anyone think we're heading for a Kent State moment any time soon?

I'll just say I hope not! But I don't have a good feeling about the rest of the summer.

    nope.

Tensions aren't that high. And the 'authorities' know how to handle crowds. Absolute worse case --- pepper spray and WTO type conflict. But even that won't happen.

The times, they are a changing...

no Kent State. both "sides" generally respect the soldiers and abide by the laws. I don't see the Cindy Sheehan crowd attacking the police.

    Funny

To me the war supporters are the ones who seem a bit more militant.

    ;)

I just hope everyone is right!

Besides, Sheehan's camp is now on private property. If the pro- supporters start anything, then the owner of the land can have them carted off as trespassers.

One big difference between now and then is the volunteer army vs, the draft.
Young people will certainly oppose a government that forces them to fight and die against their will. Most of the soldiers in Iraq have made the conscious decision to support this presidents initiative. I guess that maybe isn't true for the reservist who never thought they would be in a shooting war.

The other big difference is the duration and the body count. Viet Nam was in the forefront of the news for 5 or 6 years before Kent State and the body count was in the tens of thousands. Also, even though I don't believe 911 and Iraq are linked a large percentage of the American people do giving a justification for this war and there was never any thing close to lthat kind of event in Viet Nam.

the students gave them the dreaded evil eye.

actually - i thought the students pelted them with rocks. I may be mistaken since I know virtually nothing about the incident. i'm not justifying the guards' actions.

For god's sake, I hope not. I can't imagine that happening, but no one could imagine it when Kent State did occur. I remember watching the TV and being horrified by it.

Frankly, I would poo-poo the idea, but if you're talking about an incident by some crazed private citizens upon some protesters, then I have to say that Rush Limbaugh made a comment on his show earlier this week that chilled me when I heard it, and made me think of Kent State. I'm paraphrasing, because it was early in the week (if I'm remembering correctly... life has been hectic at Android Central), but he was talking about Crawford and Sheehan, then did that deep chuckle of his, and said he was surprised that some "patriotic Texans" hadn't busted the camp up. Anyone else hear it? I listen to Rush because he's sometimes funny, and it gives one a window into the far-right "Rush" crowd and their latest, goofy BS.

This is really a creepy topic. I just can't see it. It's unthinkable.
