Now that spring is here (at 4500'+ above sea level that is) I have sculpted a pretty intensive workout for myself. I run or jog 5 yards, and then I walk 2000 to cool down. Hopefully I can work up to a .001%age of total jogging by the end of summer. Regardless, as luck would have it, I was on my walking portion today when I almost stepped on a rattlesnake. I got about 3 feet from him... on a downhill (with my momentum about to throw myself onto him) when I heard him telling me to bug off.

Since I had just randomly chosen a separate hill to jog up, and this side to walk down, I very easily could have greeted this guy under different circumstances. Lucky me.

The thing is, is that there are few places that people can take their dogs off of leashes in Salt Lake... and those places are usually rattlesnake dens. I passed about 40 dogs on my jog back and about 15 of them were leashless...

have you guys ever had trouble w/ your dogs and snakes? I hear about dogs getting bitten from time to time but it seems as if it would be more prevalent.

My pet Doberman caught a ribbon snake today. After messing around with the snake for ten minutes I let him on his way only to accidentially get him with the weed eater an hour later. Non fatal injuries to the ribbon....

My apt complex has a wood running along one-side (right outside my front door) and we have snakes. I saw one, but couldn't identify it. A neighbor told me he's killed two rattlers. Another told me someone got bit (I don't believe it, though). It has me a bit worried about my puppy who will certainly want to greet any new friend she comes across. I'm relying on the snakes' desire to avoid contact and the fact she's almost always leashed to keep her out of trouble. But I should start wearing shoes.

My Cocker Spaniel walked up on a large grey copperhead (maybe) in a field we go play in. This snake was easily 3 feet long! My dog was on the end of his lead and sort of reared back and was about to attack it, when I held him back and sorta shoo'd the snake away.

And yesterday when we started our walk (in a park near our house) there was this HUGE snake skin near a tree. Freaky. It looked rattlesnake brown...

rockhead: why do they have to rescue Cockerspaniels? We have a nationally reknown greyhound rescue operation a couple of miles up the road here... but cocker spaniels? What's up with that? Have you ever seen a cocker race?!
