I think it would be cool if the Dome could be turned into some type of Houston Sports Museum/Hall of Hame.
Stupid, huh? Try thinking outside the box and listen to insiders. The track stadium idea was actually one of the main reason's why Houston was such a strong candidate for the Olympics. Most of the athletes and coaches at the time were hoping Houston would have won the olympic bid because this stadium would have been such a great facility and helped the sport as a whole...beyond the olympics themselves. Athletes were actually lobbying the IOC to give the bid to Houston for just this reason. If they built it, it would have been great. But the IOC couldn't get past our ugly freeway system and strip malls despite that the cost of the Olympics would have literally been 1/10th the cost of having it in NYC (which ultimatly got the US-IOC bid for the olympics).
This is actually what I was hoping it would be. Still with the hotel, minus all the Camp Snoopy crap.
My post in Braveheart speak: Ah hink it will wark as lang as ye center aw yer visitors reit thaur (yoo need a closer intl airport). ye need a way tae metro fowk thaur. gie some high quality restauraunts in thaur sae th' it ay towners hae somewhaur tae easily fin' a guid scran. dae ye troaps hae a rodeo drife yit? if nae, thes is th' place tae pit it. thaur main be a large crew ay wealthy fowk willin' tae spend bunsens doon thaur. ye can attract locals an' big time messages is th' way tae dae it. when Ah was thaur it seemed liked thaur was naethin' close tae reliant fur me tae dae. Eh, you gotta spend money to make money. Using a decripit old Dome to host a couple football games or track meets every year might work for a little while, but the upkeep of the Dome probably won't be offset enough by the gate receipts that those events would bring in. It's all about the dollars, which is why the hotel and shop theme is probably at the top of the list. It also makes Reliant Stadium that much more appealing as a place to host things like Super Bowls, Final Fours, political conventions, and maybe even the Olympics. Think Mall of America... people travel miles just to go there (to freaking Minnesota people!) to shop. I just don't want something built that will need renovating again in just 20-30 years. Build it right the first time.
now that's a benefit i didn't even think about. the media and the respective leagues would camp out there for super bowls, final fours..etc. didn't even consider that. just another option for people. and one RIGHT NEXT to the stadium. that's pretty hard to beat.
take off the tint. that was the problem with the grass growing in the dome...once they tinted the windows, it would not grow.
It'd be nice if they could get this rolling before they start taking bids for the 2010 (I think) Super Bowl.
agreed...but doesn't look like that will happen. unless the NFL delays further its decision on the 2010 Super Bowl...which I'm understanding will be decided in October.
I like it. Drop a few nice restaurants and shops in there, and it would be a nice, cool(ed) destination in the summer.
Yup, exactly. So we get another hotel. Woo hoo. Now Houston is a much better city. People will travel from miles around...to see our hotel. We now will have two convention centers with hotels that are too small to host the really big conventions. I was really hoping for some imagination and they would make the dome into something that would actually live up being the eight wonder of the world. Something that set the city apart. But the almighty dollar beckons and we build another ho-hum hotel with shops.
We should just turn the dome into a state-of-the-art biodome, and put some of those lions and elephants in there.
