San Diego trades the #1 pick to Atlanta for the #5 pick and a 3rd round pick this year, plus a 2nd round pick next season and a player. ------------------ And then, depression set in...
Do you know who the player involved in the deal was? This doesn't seem like much in return for a #1 pick. ------------------

Additional picks are more important in football than in basketball. Whereas the same trade in the NBA draft (except only second rounders) would seem ludicrous, in the NFL it is usually easier to find gems late in the draft. I think trading the pick is a very smart move. First, they dont necessarily need him. In my opinion, Flutie is a winner (see Buffalo with Flutie vs. Buffalo with Johnson). Second, they couldn't work out a contract with him. Third, in all honesty, he is not a definite sure thing (is he a Kordell Stewart or a Donovan McNabb--BIG difference). Now they can get someone they need who is still really good and also have extra chances to pick up some gems in later rounds. ------------------ Haha.. you fool! You're cheering for nothing. Actually you should be upset that the Chargers will get 4 players who will be playing this year instead of Vick who is completely raw and probably wouldn't have played for at least a season or two. ------------------ The ox is slow but the Earth is patient.
Idiots. ------------------ Chris Webber at the July 28, 2001 3:00 PM news conference when he announces where he will go: "It seemed tough, but with guidance from Steve Francis, I learned my true destiny. Thanks to the loyal fans in Sacramento, but Houston, Texas is where I belong."
Woah, woah, woah. Vick is considered one of the best QB prospects in a good time, and you people think SD got a good deal by setting themselves up to draft L. Tomlinson (a decent back), a third rounder this year, a 2nd rounder next year (which will be around 37 overall) and Tim Dwight? Give me a break. Vick is an exciting player who, when he's ready, will be dangerous for 7 points at any time. Sure he might not play much this year, but so what? San Diego wouldn't be ready to win this year any way. It's the future that they could be scary, and they just shot themselves in the foot. ------------------ Nuggets4 This space for rent!
Wasn't Leaf considered a great QB prospect a the time. Also maybe Vick priced himself out. ------------------ "Repression never did me any harm (I finally ceased to include "stop masturbating" as one of my guilt ridden New Year's resolutions, but that's a different topic)." Vick is very unique. Yes, he does posess the athletic skills of players like Donovan McNabb and Kordell Stewart, but football scouts have compared his arm to Dan Marino. He is not a prototype drop-back passer for sure, but his arm strength and passing accuracy are incredible. This is not a Steve McNair situation either. McNair was unproven in big time college football and had very raw skills and a monster arm. Vick only lost one game in his entire college career - the championship game against #1 Florida State. In that game, he went nuts and proved his capacity in pressure situations. The guy so often gets compared to black quarterbacks because he is mobile, but Steve Young and John Elway were exceptionally mobile. This guy's arm is stronger than both of them. What is also unique about Vick is that his is big. He isn't super tall (6'1") but he is wide and has laid some pretty serious hits of his own on college defenders. The guy is an awesome physical specimen. I'm no scout, but, if you have a shot at a franchise quarterback, I think you are unwise to pass him up. Maybe they were gun-shy because of the Leaf thing, but I was really hoping Vick would last one more season in college and end up a Texan. Oh, well. ------------------ And then, depression set in...
Vick will be another Kordell Stewart. Good trade for the Chargers. Vick wasn't going to step in and help for awhile, whereas Tomlinson will. ------------------ "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored."- (Aldous Huxley)
Ahahaahahahhahahahahahahahahah! Raiders get rams TE for 4th pick - We Get More Value than a 4th - Get our starting TE - Rams tip their hand SD passes on #1 - No Vick For Them - I don't blame them, they got a good deal since Vick wouldn't sign. - Still No Vick for them! Trent Green Goes to Chiefs. - They got a decent deal - They aren't desperate for a QB now - They still need help. Can this get any better for the Raiders? ------------------ Draftsource.net
I think people are concerned because he did so much running in college that he's not able to pass and that he'll end up as another Kordell (or at least like McNair, who was a passing machine in college but has struggled with the passing game in the pros). The talk about his inability to read defenses only strengthens that argument. Personally, I think he could easily be a great QB. He's got eladership ability (something that actually counts for a lot in the pros), and he appears to have the talent to succeed. But he does have questions. Like McNair and Stewart, he is too quick to tuck the ball under his arm and run rather than going to a secondary receiver. There is a very good possibility that he could not live up to his potential. He could be the next Steve Young, or he could be the next Steve McNair (not that McNair is bad. He's just not lived up to his potential, in my opinion) or worse. I'd probably have drafted him if I were San Diego, but I don't think you can sit back and say that he's a for sure future star. I actually think it was money that's keeping him out of San Diego more than any questions about his talent. The Chargers are not a revenue rich team, and I do think they are probably still a little gun-shy after the Leaf debacle. I sure wouldn't want to be in his shoes right now. I would hate to be the guy Atlanta is going to pick (There's just something about that city I don't like), and I wouldn't particularly like the prospect of playing 10 games on artificial turf each year. San Diego would've been a much nicer place to be. ------------------ Houston Sports Board
I don't think Vick's team will be unhappy if he leads them to a superbowl thanks to his great maturity and poise under pressure (traits that McNair has shown). ------------------
But he (McNair) has struggled with the passing game and kept them from advancing in other years. (And it's debatable whether one can say that Steve McNair led them to the Super Bowl. For one thing, a boneheaded call by Wade Phillips and an extraordinary kick-off return by the Titans were the only things keeping the Titans from a first-round loss that year. And the team played just as well - actually a little better, some would say - with Neil O'Donnell at the helm.) McNair has been too quick to tuck and run or dump off to the HB, instead of going through his progression and throwing to his receivers. Vick has shown that same tendancy. The Falcons can't really count on Wade Phillips and the Music City Miracle allowing them to have Vick lead them to the Super Bowl. The fact is, McNair has hampered his team at times with his passing (and he actually hasn't shown poise under pressure. He tucks and runs. He dumps to the HB. He doesn't sit in the pocket and wait for the play to develop. Jeff Fisher has talked about it as a weakness. Steve McNair has talked about itas a weakness. It's the lack of poise under pressure that has hampered the Titans. The fact that he has other skills that can make up for some of those shortcomings don't make them irrelevant shortcomings). ------------------ Houston Sports Board [This message has been edited by mrpaige (edited April 20, 2001).]
The big diffence between Stewart and Vick is that Vick actually has a gun for an arm and Stewart doesn't. I've heard Vick compared mostly to Young when it comes to pure quarterbacking skills and leadership ability. They are both lefties as well. ------------------ And then, depression set in...
Leaf has made them gunshy, the Chargers are punishing Vick for the mistakes Leaf made. I think Vick will be a franchise quarterback and that this will be the second big draft screw-up in a short time for the Chargers when it comes to quarterbacks. Besides, what are they gonna do in one year when Flutie can't go anymore? ------------------ Founder and President of the Houston Homers Club(HHC) - Are you a homer? Join now! I feel for Vick. Dan Reeves already #(%@ed over one incredible QB in his prime (Elway) and now he gets to try to ruin another QB's career. ------------------ Nuggets4 This space for rent!
Vick may have a strong arm but from what I've seen it's not very accurate. Even playing for VTech he had games where he was throwing the ball all over the field only to win the game with his running ability. In fact I remember a game I think against Syracuse where he could not hit a thing all game long but at the end of the game he scrambled down the sidelines for like 60 yards to win the game. He's not going to win many games in the NFL that way. ------------------ The ox is slow but the Earth is patient.
