I'd love to get my hands on that... I have all of the high end multimedia software just waiting :)

I remember when I worked at Apple some employee asking Steve Jobs at a meeting "Why don't we just make Mac OS X compatible with Intel boxes. We all know it is the best user interface in the world. It would sell like crazy!"

Jobs replied "Because then we'd never sell another Apple Computer. It would turn us into a software company in the blink of an eye. Remember Power Computing? Thanks for your questions, though..."

    Apple has two options:
    1. Sell high end computer equipment and load it with the the best software at a reduced price or in some cases free or
    2. Specialize in software only and sell everything at a much higher price.

Clearly they will stick with option 1.

If I were these guys I would get a good IP lawyer, FAST.

What's odd is that they said OS X appeared to be running faster on the PC platform. Weird.

I think the osx86 torrent is supposed to be installed with vmware. Is there one that we can install natively yet? Nothing wrong with vmware...but I'd rather run os x natively.

nevermind. You can do native install too. Vmware is just needed to extract the files.

Not quite. They've just taken the OS from the Intel kits and removed the TPM dependencies. All this is really doing is encouraging Apple to install their own ROM, and integrating it tightly with the graphics layer.

Hackers are running OS X on an Intel platform before Apple has put out the official release of the functionality. Yes, they have been beaten to the punch. Is it legal? Nope. Is it supported? Nope. But it's been done.

It is because Apple constantly lags behind in the processor race, and has for years. They play the "CPU speed is based on more then MHz" card which is true to an extent, but considering Intel is up to 3.73GHz and Mac is just now coming around to 2.7GHz they are lagging behind. They also tend to wait to integrate new technologies into their systems like higher front side bus, faster memory, ATA Serial and such... and intel based machines are ALWAYS on that cutting edge.

Also, if you'll notice you can only get a PowerMac in dual processor configuration, to help skew the numbers in their favor even more. The bottom line is Apple has been "comfortable" being the styling alternative while selling inferior speed products at a MUCH higher price... but now the tables have turned thanks to some hackers. Apple should have licensed out their software years ago, and if they did they would have a much bigger edge on the market then the 2-3% they do now.

Feel free to ask IBM how important the software market is in comparison to the computer hardware market... I know there are millions of potential Mac OSX users out there who simply refuse to pay 3000 bucks for a computer when hey can get a top of the line dell for 1/3rd of that price.

Going strictly by that definition, you are correct. However, you would have to say the same of EVERY software release, as developer/beta versions (including new functionality) regularly find their way to P2P networks before the official release. Similarly, George Lucas was "beat to the punch" because I can go buy a VCD of Sith months before the official DVD arrives.

Except for one thing : this is an example of something that is far more historic in the computing industry. It's also an example of something that has never been done and people had eagerly been awaiting. No one had ever done this before to my knowledge. It's a first. We're not talking about someone getting the latest version of Norton Antivirus, and we're not talking about a guy watching a movie before he's supposed to.

From what I understand, you can either install it from a vmware share or you can choose not to. I intend to install it without vmware.

... assuming I can find the time.

well i tried it...works okay. Too bad my cpu doesn't have sse3! Fun and all, but I already have a mac. And it's true, it runs so much faster on intel processors. My thinkpad with intel centrino 1.8 ghz BLOOOWS away my imac 2ghz g5 in terms of speed and responsiveness under OS X. It's not even close!
