Just like someone else said, I would sit his butt and make him eat his contract. If he shows up and dogs it, sit him on the bench, it's going to eat at him that the Eagles will do nothing about his contract. One stupid move by TO, suspend him without pay. And who'se gonna give TO his contract wishes after this debacle? I hope he gets blackballed by every team in the NFL.
whatever wr's get cut will head straight to philly. I think they should try to get some CFL all star receivers and pay them a boatload to come over.
preface - I've always thought TO had no class based on his antics, but I've admired his talent on the field (he's been on my fantasy team the past 3 years). What the hell is in this guys head? ROCKS?!? He signed a big contract last year. If this contract was so bad why did he sign it? No one held a gun to his head did they... no he held a gun to the NFL's head and forced his way into Philly via Balt. No he doesn't want to be there... too bad. Suck it up, play, and earn your money on the field, nimrod.
You gotta admit, he seemed to play better, or atleast getting more exposure/contract money once he started behaving like a raving jack a$$. Honestly you can't hate the player, hate the game. NFL football with it's ability for teams to cut players and unspoken understanding that sit outs and free agency are very much a part of the game (unlike other sports with guaranteed contracts), it's just the way the game works. T.O. just plays it very badly. He should've made it known in the club house (not drag out with his prior rep), sits and "rests" his body for a few games with every bump he gets, picks up his checks this year and put the pressure on the Eagles to think whether or not to bring him back the third year (when there are going to be a price jump) would be a good idea or not.
One last thing, I don't think TO's contract is really that big until next year, his pay in the first two years were definitely low for a player of his caliber (though it's his fault for signing it, I would've played for Baltimore if I was him). He either has to play like a champion this year and force the eagles to give him the money starting next year, or just hot dog it without all these media fan fare.
TO is the man!! He wants his money, and sure he already makes millions, but I'd bet a lot of people on this board would feel the exact same way he does if you were in his situation. Maybe he doesn't go about expressing himself in the best manner, but it's the only way he knows how. And to be honest, I love that is a straight shooter. He hasn't done anything wrong, he showed up to camp on time, and he took a big chance in the Super Bowl. If he got injured, he would have been cut in a second. Although now the Eagles would look like complete idiots if they gave in to TO now, they should have corrected this problem before it was made public.
He signed a CONTRACT... you know, one of those legally binding document thingies. If he wanted more money, he should have held out for more money when he originally signed the contract. If they EVER thought about giving him more money players all over the NFL would be demanding a new contract. I could care less his intentions, the dude signed a contract... end of story. If he signed for league minimum he should honor the contract or sit his ass on the bench with a suspension and not get paid a dime.
The players need guranteed contracts. That would end all the mess. NFL did great with the whole franchise tag thing. It's been beautiful. But they need to rectify the guaranteed contract thing before it gets out of hand. Owens agreed to nfl terms as they stood. So he sohuld live up to it. But I see where the agents and players are coming from. He should've taken a stand on the issue instead of himself. That may have been more effective. As for being paid top 10 that is stupid. The money will always be going up. You don't always get to be in the top 10. That is life insports. Long after he retires, the players will be making 10x what he made. That's just the way it is. Contracts bind. .
Eagles saying their was no secret agreement. Owens damage control worked t osome degree (until he called out mcnabb), but not if he lied. Two people you don't call out. The coach. The qb. The man is insane. But did a nice job of image control on the whole.
You can't have guaranteed contracts with a hard cap. Every team in the NFL has cut people for salary cap purposes.
The reason the NFL is as successful as it is now, is because of the no guarantee on contracts. If you notice nearly every team has a shot at the beginning of the season... you don't have the Royals or Devil Rays of the MLB or the Clippers of the NBA. I wish the NBA and MLB went the way of the NFL. If a player sucks, he gets cut. We wouldn't have the Beltrans or Cato's of today. These guys playing one season are set for life... if they don't perform they shouldn't be paid. The no guarantee helps players just as much as it hurts them. Players get cut all the time because of cap reasons and then resign with another team for more money AND they generally make a lot bigger signing bonuses then they ever would have in a guaranteed contract setting; so it goes both ways.
Owens needs to go to an asylum. I don't care how great this guy is (with his physical talents), his emotional IQ is about -5 and makes him not worth having for ANY team. Go ahead and throw your career down the toilet, dumbass. All i ask is that ESPN quit giving you the attention you want every 5 minutes. There are other sports stuff out there besides this egomaniac.
I was listening to Mike and Mike this morning and some interesting things came up. For one, the Eagles owner made an official statement from the team denying the "secret waiver" thing. He's opened himself up to litigation if it turns out he's the one lying. So, if there is a secret waiver, where is TO's copy??? Then another analyst/reporter said he rang up Len Pasquereli and had him look up the claims about TO being not even in the top ten highest paid players at his position. More BS. His deal is similar to Randy Moss's. And if you look at his base salary, which is 3.25 million, you might think, ahh, the non-bonus money is where he's lowly paid. Again, BS, he's in the top 5 of highest paid recievers at his base salary as well. They are also saying Reid f'd up in kicking him out, that this is what Drew Rosenhouse wanted because now they can say TO showed up and was working hard, he's honoring his contract.
Dwight Clark was on 610 yesterday, he was in SanFran's front office when they drafted T.O. He said the same thing Brent Jones said on a Texans' broadcast last season, that T.O. was quiet and humble when he came to the league. This is obviously a guy who's fame has corrupted him or either he's a guy who feels he's gonna make everyone pay for the tough route he had coming into the league. Coming from a poor home, going to a small school, and having to play behind Rice. Which ever it is, he's bordering on insane.
Oh thats nothing. This morning I was watching NFL total access and they were doing an interview with Romeo Crennel, talking to him about the upcoming Browns season. During the interview they flash a picture of two at the bottom and it says "Coming up, more of the T.O. story." They can't even get through one freaking interview without reminding people about Terrell's crazy ass. On a side note, any NFL fan that doese not have the NFL network is really missing out. I have been watching that thing non-stop lately.
Actually, the worst was the highlights of the Dodgers/Phillies games where ESPN had TO quotes after various plays. r****ded. I'd like to know if this waiver thing is true. I'd also like to see the NFL go to some sort of guaranteed salary structure. TO's turned insane, but with the way the league is set up, I can't blame him for trying to get more money when he can because he or any other player can be cut at the team's will and they lose their non-signing bonus money. I think the fault lies with the ******* agent, but that's just as much TO's fault as the agents. Just like with Beltran.
Actually, I think his agent hates the way TO is acting because he knows his tantrum is costing him some serious $$$$. TO is on the verge of getting suspended for conduct detremental to the team which will cost him some pay checks, and no team in their right mind would be willing to give TO a bigger contract by the way he is acting. I just can't see TO playing for the Eagles this year with the coach's, fans, and players all hating him.
Players essentially do have guaranteed contracts with respect to huge signing bonuses. Owens signed a contract that included a $10,000,000 signing bonus which means he had a guaranteed $10,000,000 deal.
Yeah but that 49.7 mill for 7 years is not. He gets injured and plays subpar after recovery as result, the team can waive him without paying the rest of the contract. Then the team can sign him to a smaller contract because he is not the player he once was. Happens all the time in the NFL.
