And it got an 8.8. Here's IGN's a brief excerpt from their review:

ESPN 2k5 owned Madden 05...it's a shame EA has to buy out the competition. :(

So I take it you guys will be getting this game:

Once the current-gen Madden 06 buzz settles down, maybe EA will start showing more of the Xbox 360 version. I haven't seen anything on it since E3, and it was hard enough getting that.

Too bad this is from IGN, otherwise it might mean a little more.

I'm interested in seeing the general opinion on the new passing system, though.

That's true. As I've said countless times, I don't really value IGN's reviews that much. If it wasn't for their coverage of events like the PS meeting or the Xbox Summit in Japan, I probably wouldn't even go to the site. I'd be curious to see what the other review sites give the game. In the past, IGN has normally rated the game higher than other sites (Gamespot, Gameinformer, 1up, etc), so it will be interesting to see if that happens again. It would be strange to see if Madden were to get a 7.x at one of the sites, although that would be a big drop from the average score.

If the game is a little underwhelming, given the circumstances, it may not be too surprising. I'm guessing Tiburon had a tougher than usual year (although without competition halfway in), and maybe they're putting most of their time into the 360 version.

Bringing this one back since the game has received a few more reviews. My suspicions were more or less correct. Gamespot gave the game a 8.2 (Xbox/PS2; 8.1 for the GC):
    http://www.gamespot.com/xbox/sports/maddennfl2006/review.html

So close to a 7.x score. To be fair, 1up did give it a 9/10, so IGN didn't give the highest score of the sites I mentioned previously. Still, a 8.2 from GS and a 8.8 from IGN doesn't seem like a Madden-type score. I wonder if it really is that big of a letdown compared to other Maddens.

Just out of curiosity, is anyone getting the game? Or is everyone waiting for the 360 version (or even the PSP version :D)? Considering the game was released today, I would have thought there would be more buzz about the game here. Although technically, I guess most people won't be getting it until tomorrow depending on when stores get the game.

I usually get it, but I get so much more play out of NCAA. It's usually just more fun to me, there are more teams to choose from, and I love the Dynasty options. So, I might get it again this year, but the odds are I won't play it a whole lot.

I wouldn't trust the Gamespot review as they have quite a few facts about the game wrong in the review. The biggest falsehood in the review is the stat tracking bug they sighted that does not exist.

But screw all reviews, it only matters what I think to me. I bought it last night. I got home, did the tutorials, did a lil practice and jumped into a game. Texans vs Jags. I was the Texans. The running game is improved. I ran for over 150 yards. But that passing cone is going to take a looooong time to get used to it. I had a terrible percentage, though I threw for over 175 yards, mainly due to some bombs to Andre Johson. Also, I feel like the precision passing is useful, but man it is sensitive! I got my WR killed a few times because of it. The entire passing game is going to take some getting used to.

Honestly the passing cone deal changes the game alot. Changes the game entirely on the offensive side, IMO. There are new additions like blocking shifts and more control over hot routes as well. The game feels like a real game of NFL football. No joke, you have so much control, so many options, that it is like a real game of football. I think it is going to turn off alot of people, especially the ESPN players. This game is deep and you might say less fun if you are not a football junkie. That doesn't mean that you won't have success without studying the game totally, just means to master the game is going to take awhile.

If you are expecting a graphical jump, you need to wait until the 360 version.

NCAA and Madden are completely different this year. In Madden passing is totally different. It is going to take awhile to get used to, but I think that it will stop people online from running back 30 yards and throwing a perfect pass, while in mid-stride.

That bit was a little strange, and apparently, they have since taken it out. Hmm...

Can't comment on the rest of the review (or any reviews) since I haven't played the game, or even plan on playing it any time soon. Whether or not they are as bad as the review(s) say, the passing cone and superstar mode do sound interesting. Not sure if I would pay ~$50 for the game, especially if I had 2005, but these are some interesting features. I am a bit of a cheapskate when it comes to games though.
