He said that he was a smoker, and had quit over 20 years ago and stayed sober for the most part. However, 9/11 was too much for him to handle and he said that he got "weak" and gave in to his old habits, lighting up once again.

As for the 9/11 coverage, he was my source too. I stayed tuned to ABC whenever he was on, and changed the channel when someone else took over. In my mind, he was the only man I could trust to cover all the angles of such an event that had deep international roots, which was Jenning's specialty and what he did best.

Anyways, CNN is doing a re-run of a Larry King interview with Jennings from '03.

Ted Koppel and Peter Jennings were the reason ABC was the only channel I went to for news. Haven't touched it since Ted left Nightline. Something about the way Koppel was so overly amused with himself made me feel more informed about the show's topic. If that made sense.

Dammit. I didn't even know he had cancer, I must've missed that. Out of the big three over the past few years, he was my choice to tune in to. RIP

The only news show I'd ever consider watching was his.

    RIP Peter Jennings. :(

When people you grew up watching start dying, you know you're getting old.

Born in 79, I grew up watching him. Our family has always been an ABC family and I'm really sad he's gone. I remember him during the Gulf War and especially after 9/11. He sat in his chair for days straight and I also only tuned into him. He looked so tired but I admired him for being there for America.

    RIP

    :(

    RIP

btw- on the 9/11 coverage... The Smithsonian's exhibit of the 9/11 tragedies that is touring (currently in KC, MO) uses his coverage for the running commentary on the film they are showing of the day's events. When I saw it, I realized I had seen and heard those exact moments before... I hadn't given it much thought before I saw the exhibit, but Jennings was who I was watching when it all unfolded... he did an extraordinary job of remaining calm throughout the whole event... Being in Texas and having just arrived at work, I watched as the first of the two towers fell... and shortly afterwards the second. He stayed 16 hours on camera alone on the day of. He seemed to just go into hyper-professional mode those first days...

He really was one of the great newscasters of the 21st century. :(
