How do you enter I-35 on those short entry ramps ? I've lived here 3 years and I still live in fear of getting on the ramp. They give you about 50 feet to build your speed up to 55. I just punch it and hope noone is behind me. What do you guys do ? Do you yield ? ------------------ "norm, would you like to buy an indian scalp ? Punch it. It's the only way. I hate it when people just STOP on the ramp. Also, there's usually a shoulder that you can use also--sometimes you've got to take advantage of it.
Aren't you surprised there aren't more accidents ? I have heard it is the deadliest stretch of I-35 though. In Corpus, we had at least a 1/4 mile to merge. This is prolly my least favorite thing about Austin. ------------------ "norm, would you like to buy an indian scalp ? This deal isn't gonna make or break me Norm, so don't jerk me around." I used MoPac instead if at all possible. I hate 35. ------------------ I'm about to boldly go where many men have gone before.
If you have to, just stop or slow down a whole lot. Sometimes there's alot of cars driving fast in the lane. Check for oncoming traffic in the lane, and then gun it. ------------------ "Oh No..." -Bill Walton in 97 just before Stockton's buzzer beater
I think oncoming traffic knows not to be in the right-hand lane whenever there's a short get-on. Either that or they know what to expect and just let you get on. That's been my experience.
Too many variables. What if some jerk is going 75 and you're trying to merge, he quickly swerves into the next lane, etc. It happens, and I wish it could be changed. Baqui99, I think you have the best idea. maybe there should be a yield sign or something ? Well, maybe not. ------------------ "norm, would you like to buy an indian scalp ? just signal and move on in, if you get rear-ended it'll be the other guys fault! hehe happy drivin' rH ------------------ Homecourt will always be 'The Summit' to me!! Until we move downtown!! Those things are scary. Best to avoid the real short ones (lower deck) entirely if you have the time. My dad is a traffic engineer and he won't use them. My husband thought I was being overly cautious in staying off them, so I got used to it; just look over your shoulder a LOT (obviously not too much or else you'll hit the wall ) and figure out where your car is going to fit into the traffic. If you should get on slowly to allow someone to get ahead, or if you should gun it. Better yet, use MoPac or some alternative. Or let the bus driver take care of it for you. Doesn't help that some people in this town don't know how to drive. Getting off on those ramps isn't a whole lot better... especially the one at UT when you're trying to get onto Dean Keeton from the lower deck... sometimes it's either cut somebody off, come to a stop, or miss your exit. ------------------ Isabel,clutchcity.net lurker since 1996 DNA Sequencing Center All your base pairs belong to us.
Avoid them Gr8-1 !!!! Supposedly they were going to shut those ramps down and begin construction on longer ramps and closing about 4 or 5 of them. The worst part IMO is that the entrance ramp is like 200 feet past the exit ramp, so it gives you like 1 car length to merge into that lane. Its the most dangerous stretch of city highway in America, and I-35 is the devil. I ususally stay on the access roads while driving in town (38 1/2 St. all the way to Riverside). For the most part they are alot quicker. ------------------ "Chucky who?" Charles Barkley
Smokey, what I like about Houston traffic is that it rarely comes to a complete stop. But, Houston is also far more polluted then Austin is, so you take the good with the bad. What's the largest highway in Houston ? 6 lanes each way ? The lanes are narrow in Austin, very narrow. But, that's the least of my worries. My heart literally stops everytime I enter or exit I-35. It's scary. across110thstreet, I had heard that too, but I think it's an urban legend. I've also heard that he went to ATM. ------------------ "norm, would you like to buy an indian scalp ? 6 lanes each way sounds more realistic than 8. True, Houston has more pollution than Austin but I credit the majority of that pollution to the chemical refineries/plants/ship channel on the eastside. I might be wrong. I just signal and if there's lots of traffic I pray that someone will let me in. I don't think anyone follows the posted speed limit. I just put my foot on the gas the whole way. ------------------
I'd rather drive on the feeder to Riverside. Speaking of Riverside, can the lanes get any narrower? I feel trapped on that road. I got in two wrecks on RIverside and Royal Crest, both within twenty yards of each other. ------------------ "Playing with Steve makes my job so much easier, "He's such a complete player. ah, yes, the joys of driving in austin. before i moved, they said that the city traffic was going to get even worse. i remember that stretch of I-35. I used to just take the upper level, and haul ass. I once heard that the man who designed that double-decker stretch of 35 actually committed suicide, due to his poor designing, the most accidents occured on this one mile piece of highway./ ------------------ "Playing with Steve makes my job so much easier, "He's such a complete player. Don't you just miss Houston. I love driving on I-10 into town. Houston drivers shouldn't complain about traffic. I wonder what Austin is gonna do now that Light Rail has failed. Houston has more freeways, more people, and IMO is far ahead of Austin in terms of transportation. Whenever I go home I always look to see how bad the traffic is on I-35 before I get on. I'd rather drive on the feeder to Riverside. Speaking of Riverside, can the lanes get any narrower? I feel trapped on that road. I got a solution...make I-35 into 16 lanes. 8 on each side. That would solve all problems...Light Rail will never pass. [This message has been edited by Smokey (edited April 16, 2001).]
