I hear ya. I had a headhunter after me a couple of months ago, to get me to work for a company in the northernmost part of the Woodlands. I live in Southwest Houston. I laughed at them.
Living close to work is the way to go- you save money on travel expenses, have more time for real life, and don't have to deal with the stress of a commute. I live 4 blocks from work, and walk every day. I can come home for lunch and eat something healthy, instead of fast food every day. I can sleep much later, which means I have more time in the evening to do things that I want to do. My wife and can share a car too, which cuts down on gas and insurance. It's a win-win situation. Of course, if you have one of those jobs where you get called in, just don't let whoever does the calling know how close you are. J
Man it sure is a biatch doing it twice a day, but we have business intrests there so i gotta do it. I dont really wanna move out there so i go ahead and suck it up and make the drive.
Live: Pasadena, CA Work: Santa Monica, CA Distance: 32 miles Mornings: 50 minutes since I leave before 6 Evenings: 1 hour if I leave before 4, more like 1.5+ if I don't
Ouch. From the one time I've ever been to that part of the country, the freeways were jammed bumper to bumper... and it was Saturday afternoon. I would hate to be spending so much of my life in the car, especially for such a short distance, and having to get up that early... I know sometimes you don't have a choice, though.
I live in Southwest side and i drive to downtown everyday don't know how many exact miles but it takes me about 30 minutes thanks to freaking traffic on 59 near downtown no matter what time i leave. If there isn't any traffic then i can make it in about 20 minutes.
I purposefully bought my recent house 4 miles away from my office. I go home everyday for lunch and play pool / veg on the couch in front of the TiVO.
I used to walk about 25 minutes to work from '94 to 98 about 10 blocks, then moved and had to go 17 miles, then moved again and now have to drive 32 miles. Now it's 50 minutes if I drive alone, 25 minutes if I drive with 2 more people.
