Anyone know of a free WMA to MP3 converter? A buddy of mine lost many of his MP3's when he downloaded a WMA to MP3 converter which only did 75% conversion, and he hadn't listened to the whole MP3 file and removed the WMAs. He is certain he can get some of those back, because he bought most of them off WMA sites, but now he'd like to have these WMAs converted. Some are protected WMAs and some are not. He'd like to put these MP3's on his car stereo which doesn't play WMAs. I know there are many "how to convert" threads, but none of them had WMA to MP3 converters.
Sorry I can't answer your question. But I do have a related one of my own. We have an IPOD and a Creative. Can I/How do I download music such that it can be played on both units? I'm not the brightest when it comes to all this extension stuff...
I remember I did a search on Yahoo! for such a program and found many. Most were 14 or 30 day trials but once you find them hit up bit torrent sites and download them with a key. I forgot the one I have at home but I will post it when I get there.
google is your friend. Apparently Windows Media player version 10 includes a free wma->MP3 encoder: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/knowledgecenter/mediaadvice/0060.aspx
clutchfans bbs is your friend. You can use the program (JHymn) noted in this thread to convert your iPod encoded files to MP3: http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=99147&highlight=itunes
Great! Thanks. And do you have to do it that way? That is go from iPod encoded to MP3 instead of the other way around?
iPod will play MP3s, as will creative. I assume that creative won't play aac (I think that is the iPod codec) so if you want one format, you should use MP3.
Ah, I see. I had had problems in the past downloading songs to the iPod that worked on Creative, but now remember they were WMA and not mp3. So for WMA, I need to something like the Media Player ten converter? Gotcha. The iPod was free, and since all I care about is the music and not the freaking extensions, etc. I hadn't taken the time to understand it all. Many thanks.
I dont know if there are any free ones out there...but the way I do it is a two step process using two totally free programs. I first use WInamp to convert from wma to wav, and then I load them into CDex to convert from wav to mp3
Just found out on my own how to convert WMA to MP3 in one step. Set iTunes to use the MP3 encoder with the bitrate of your choice. Drag the WMA to the iTunes library. Done. Nice!
