Just got a Samsung DLP. Wifey thinks its too big and wants to hang one of those "pretty" tv's from the wall.

Everybody and their mom has told me that plasmas can easily get burn-ins from video games. I used to play alot. I have burn in on a rear projection tv. Now I play just on the weekends if I get time.

But just in case I do start playing alot, would I get burn in if I switched the DLP for a plasma?

I'm no expert on this, but it may depend on the game and how much you play. If a game keeps a certain unchanging "object" on the screen, or you pause the game for a while, you may have problems. I'm just speculating on this though; I know plasmas have gotten a lot better, so video games and plasmas may not be as bad a combination as it once was.

I cant say for sure on this since I havent read up on plasmas...but it was my understanding that burnin wasnt a problem anymore...screensavers are actually not useful for their intended purpose since burnin is so rare with current displays(crt and lcd)

What RC said is correct...burnin is only theoretically a risk if the same picture is displayed on the screen for hours and hours in the same position....and even then, it depends on who you believe as far as if burnin is even a risk anymore.

I don't know anything about plasmas, but I know that the guys at avsforum.com know pretty much everything.

It sounds like a crap shoot after the "breaking in" period. I know nothing firsthand about plasmas, but I've heard from several accounts that it's a b**** to repair if it become defective.

As long as you don't keep the same screen, or a logo mark at the same position for a prolonged period, it should not have any problem. Always use full screen and do not use 4:3 mode. I am in the TV industry! ;)

The new consoles XBOX 360 and PS3 are to be in hi def and actually advertise being played on plasmas.

I think the XBOX launch will even share ads with Samsung Plasmas.

I currently play on my little 17" plasma and have no problems at all.
    It looks great.

You can play on it...no worries.

Just make sure you watch TV on it too.....you want to avoid burn in....and that takes WEEKS of having the same static image on the screen.

Now LCD's don't have that problem.

I knew that Sony and Microsoft were promoting HDTV's, but I wasn't aware that they were specifically promoting plasmas. IIRC, the Samsung deal involved LCD TV's (~23" I believe), not any plasma TV's from Samsung. I think Sony and Microsoft would be thrilled to get people to buy any HDTV (or maybe EDTV's), let alone a specific type.

In Sony's case, they may even be promoting LCD TV's by their mentioning of 1080p content; AFAIK, it seems like there are more 1080p LCD screens than plasma. I'm not sure why since I just looked at pricegrabber for 1080p screens, but if plasmas have problems outputting 1080p, a LCD screen may be the way to go for someone who gets a PS3 (for BR movies or for games). Just guesswork by me though; maybe there are 10 different plasma screens that support 1080p that will go on sale in the next 6 months or so at an "affordable" price.

If only those CNT TV's would hurry up and hit the shelves, then we wouldn't have to worry about what each TV is good/bad at.

I don't think Plasma's are worth it. Hell, you risk messing it up whenever you watch Sportscenter, or CNN.

Do you think all they will do is share ads, or will their be some kind of discount associated with buying both?

Why not wait to buy a plasma TV until they are worth a $hit and last as long as standard TV's? Just asking.

If you wait long enough, everything will be dirt cheap. You can wait until everyone is driving jetson mobile to buy a car, I am sure it would be dirt cheap then. You can wait 20 years to buy P4 computers I am sure you can get them for a buck or two.

I am pretty sure my post said nothing about price. So I am not really sure your  is valid, nor related, even though you quoted me.

Halo is basically all I play. I am aware of what causes a burn in. I have a speedometer burned in from Midtown Madness on a rear projection.

I think I will stick with my DLP. Too many conflicting reports about plasmas. I couldn't find anything about XBox and PS2 specifically promoting plama. If I knew that for sure I probably would go exchange it tomorrow.
