token white guy we could have 5 white guys out there last year. sura, barry, bowen, padgett and yao (not white, but closer than deke) i'm fine with this, we can have more than 15 on the roster until training camp and we can send up to 6 players with 0-2 years experience down to the NBDL.
if bowen were in a sign and trade it usually is all announced at once. i see him as staying with the rox.
How about you sucking on something Jackie, my sweetheart? You're not suggesting that my not recalling Ratliff playing is the equivalent of a borderline racist comment are you?
Ryan Bowen's value in practice > Ryan Bowen's value in a game. Probably Just a thought, and that's not a bad thing.
Also, people might be underestimating his athleticism, just because he looks funny (and has a funny second first name...CLEO ). Not only that, but he also has musical talents... Personal - Full name is Ryan Cleo Bowen - He and his wife, Wendy have a cat, Nike, and a golden labrador, Bailey - Grew up a fan of the Chicago Cubs - His favorite athletes growing up were Michael Jordan, Walter Payton and Tony Dorsett - Is a fan of NASCAR - In high school, played golf, tennis and baseball as well as basketball - Was an All-State pitcher as a senior and received an invitation to try out for the Cleveland Indians - Finished fifth in the state tournament in doubles tennis as a senior - Also earned All-State music honors for choir twice - Enjoys playing golf and video games (anything sports related) in his spare time - Carded a 79 at Fox Sports' Celebrity Golf tournament at Inverness Golf Club this summer - Considers Lone Tree his home course and would also like to play Arrowhead, Castle Pines and The Sanctuary - Has an older brother, Tyler, who is a high school basketball coach in Houston, Minn., and an older sister, Nichelle - Wears No. 42 because it was his brother's high school number; his brother wore it because his favorite player at Iowa, Michael Payne, wore it. http://www.nba.com/playerfile/ryan_bowen/printable_player_files.html
Bowen's only value in the playoffs was being able to guard Nowitski, and the only reason he had an opportunity to try was because we were totally desperate after Howard's injury. I don't see Bowen playing one minute in the playoffs if Howard and/or Swift are healthy. He just has too many liabilities. James and Barry were the only two bench players who really proved to have significant value during the playoffs in my opinion. If Bowen were free, I don't see this as a smart move.
We did give Baxter/Glover a chance to play. It is called the summer league. Nothing personal Pugs, but I really don't undrestand why so many here think we have to give a player playing time to form an opinion. As fans, we can only see them if they play, and that is how we would judge them. But the coaches see the players every day in practice, preseson, tape, talk to other coaches, etc. They have all the info they need to make an informed decision.
Yeah, Ryan brings a lot of energy, but his best quality is by far and away his haircut. I know you all would agree.
He's got the Jim Carey "Dumb and Dumber" haircut going on. You would think he could afford more than $6.99 for a haircut.
You know, that was close to my original thinking. When we only had 1-2 open spots between Bowen, Barry, Glover, Baxter, or new FA (Stoud), Bowen is not one to pencil in. Bowen is a nice 12th man, but I didn't want him as a 10th man when we had options with more skill, athleticism and/or upside. But thinking more and talking to my brother, also a Rocket fan, I think it could be OK. I think we probably do the lux tax waiver for Spoon and could waive Ward too. We would still have two expiring contracts (Baker/Mooch) that would allow us to make a move for someone with salary ranging from like 3 mil to 10 mil if needed (+/- 20% rule), still plenty of flexibility. Replacing these guys (Spoon/Ward) with min guys like Bowen, Glover and Baxter are not calculated in the lux tax thing, thus Bowen may not cost to lose out on Barry, Glover, Baxter and another FA after all--which was my concern. Good chance two or three of the above still happen.
Ihope they have Sign and Trade thoughts going on... Visions of a package deal that will send him, Moochie, Charlie and Vin Baker to some one for a couple third round draft picks!
I think if there is a SnT in place it would have been announced at the same time as the news. Bowen is staying.
As the Chronicle article says, "He's more appreciated by what he adds to winning teams....blah, blah, blah". Winning being the key word here. So he signs for the minimum, Padgett makes his own destiny, and we move on to other important business. As another said, he's great in practice, brings a good energy to the court, he's chemically conducive to teammates, and having a goofy white guy is mandatory. And get this, it sends a message to Howard. Just what I'm not sure of. I like this kinda' support and move by the front office. His haircut is cool and so is his attitude. He's also a professional. A modern day Kirt Chambliss - sorta', kinda', but not really.
