What you want is an "emphemora" store. That's what they call old paper products - everything from newspapers and magazines to old postcards and photos.

Most antique co-op's have at least one ephemora dealer. You should hit the book and paper show at the Astrohall when it comes in the summer as well.

As for shops in Houston, there aren't many. Your best bet is to hit some of the Antique places and look around.

Carolyn Thompson's Antique Center - Old Katy Rd. at the corner of 610 and I 10 - is a HUGE place. You should also hit Westheimer between the curve and Shepherd. Places like River Oaks Antiques and the Antique Pavillion are in there. Also, 19th Street between Yale and Shepherd has quite a few and there are quite a few shops in Seabrook.

    Good luck!

As I sit here awaiting the demise of my company, I thought of the following :

Does anybody know of a place in Houston that sells really old periodicals, newspapers, etc? I have this fascination with reading things from the past. For example I've got quite a few National Geographics from the early 1900's (not too difficult to come by), several of the early Sports Illustrateds, Houston & Dallas Newspapers with stories about the first moon landing and Nixon's resignation. Some of these newspapers are cool because they'll talk about a store at a certain intersection, or show pictures of an address and it's nothing like that now. The National Geographics are cool because you'll see ads for tree surgery which apparently was huge back then, Model A(T?) cars, etc.

There used to be a little old lady that ran a shop called the Old Book & Curiosity Company on Chimney Rock, but I think she got fed up with the crime in the area and shut down. She used to carry really old magazines and papers like this.

Anyway, so do any of you know any stores like this?
