You do know that a lot of men ride English? Granted most of them are gay, but there are some out there that are straight. I'm glad someone enjoys those pants because they are damn uncomfortable and generally unflattering as well. ------------------ Poopy! And, yes, I have a boyfriend. Five papers and counting! wahoo!
It was actually mentioned prior to the First round game between Duke and Lamar last year in mens basketball. Billy Packer I think told the bit about the horse and then said the coach of Lamar said that should his team win, they should call it a Lamar, rather than an upset. ------------------ Founder and President of the Houston Homers Club(HHC) - Are you a homer? I heard them play a clip on the Rome show yesterday by Tiger saying he does consider it winning the Grand Slam. I hate Tiger so I'm a little biased. Add into that how much I dislike golf, and I have to say that I could care less about grand slams. But Tiger did say that he himself does consider it a valid grand slam win because he holds all the titles at once or something along those lines. ------------------ Poopy! Horsies. I worked at a stable for 14 months. I was the assistant stable manager. Besides working at that farm my family owned a horse for most of my early youth. the girls and boys(i think there were 2) on the club were very successfull in competition, and they were deffinately not atheletes. I am aware that at its highest level (the afore mentioned "Hampton Calssic") it aproaches sport in dedication as well as athletic ability. however unlike soccer it is not a sport in general practice. it is an exercise in horsemanship and animal husbandry than a sport. I will certainly not knock equestrian as a non activity, or whatever. it is a verry complicated task. there is athleticism involved in boping up and down all the time(which leads to thise nich but muscles in those pants) communication with thebhorse, balance.. la de da and all that jazz. but i have a hard time endorsing any activity that as the human you do the least amount of the work as a sport. car racing included here. at least in tersage the rider does alot more than whi[p the horse and yell go, go , go whch is basicly all jockys do. Ali do you find it at all disturbing that little girls have to clean the horses sheath as part of the grooming process?? older riders do as well, but to me that is less disturbing than having 10 year old kids doing it. just wondering? peace ------------------ Hanta-Force Paintball www.hanta-force.com
Absolutely ridiculous. The Grand Slam in golf is winning the 4 majors in the same year, and now Tiger is trying to change the definition. Bobby Jones is probably doing backflips in his grave. This whole mess has Nike's stench all over it. ------------------ "Blues is a Healer" --John Lee Hooker
Has Tiger made some personal attack toward you or something? How can you dislike someone for making their sport more exciting(IMO) and attracting so many kids to the sport? And for winning so consistently? Arrogant? If I had his ability I'd expect to win everytime I played too. I don't know about this. You can be arrogant and all of the above. Take for example, Kobe Bryant. I think he's extraordinarily arrogant -- good player, but still arrogant. To me, Tiger falls into that same category. When he supports redefining the Grand Slam when he's close to winning the "dumbed down" version, that seems pretty arrogant to me. ------------------ http://www.swirve.com ... more fun than a barrel full of monkeys and midgets.
I think the fact that he considers it a grand slam when the definition for about, oh 70 years or so, has been that the grand slam is winning the majors in one calendar year, is proof enough that he's arrogant. Did anyone catch his post TPC interview? He was basically saying "nanny nanny boo boo" to everyone who was saying he was in a slump. I personally think he's classless, but an amazing golfer. Kinda reminds me of myself, except I have class and can't golf. ------------------ www.swirve.com I think my w**** is dead.
Our vets clean sheaths, not us. Furthermore, I am an athlete. I work out just like other athletes. I have major injuries just like other athletes. My horse is an athlete. It takes A LOT of athletic ability as well as talent to do what we do. I disagree with you, but hey it is your opinion against mine. ------------------ Poopy! And, yes, I have a boyfriend. Confidence is different then Arrogance. No on the Original question..it would be a big acheivement, but not a grand slam. A grand slam is a one year thing, like winning the Triple Crown, or a Grand Slam in Tennis, or winning the Triple in Soccer. DaDakota ------------------ If you like RTS games, check out this one. www.frontierwars.com coming soon to a PC near you.
I think it is a Grand Slam of some sorts but not a "THE" Grand Slam. He already has what they call the "Career"Grand Slam, winning all majors already in his short career and of course he would be the reigning champion of all four majors all at the same time, which make up the Grand Slam. Give the guy some credit! He deserves to be arrogant because he is a phenomena, although I think the guy is just VERY confidant. Do you personnaly know that he is arrogant? I mean noone really knows him 'cept his friends and family. GOLF IS FUN! ...did I spell career right? ------------------ Whatever you want to do, you have to do something else first.
I hate to bring back up this thread but RM95 says that he didn't like Tiger because he seemed to rub it in that he beat the other golfers. Just curious, but when the Mario Elie hit a 3 in the corner to knock out Phoenix in the playoffs was that classless? And when Houston fans hung jerseys of players that the Rockets knocked out of the playoffs, like Karl Malone and David Robinson was that classless, or was that confidence? Do you call that classless and arrogant on their part, or do you call it a case of the Rocket fans calling out the media and doubters who said they couldn't win a 2nd championship? I think Tiger is getting a bad rap because he is successful and confident. ------------------ Meow! [This message has been edited by RocksMillenium (edited April 10, 2001).]
how is it 'dumbed' down from what I understand they did not play ANYWHERE NEAR as many tourney's back in Bobby's day He holds all the titles at once It would be like saying in base ball It is not a 'REAL' Grand Slam because the pitcher *walked* the bases loaded. . . instead of off of hits Like DaDakota says Tiger is confident Kobe is Arrogant. Tiger has done something Extra-Ordinary QUESTION: Why is ESPN saying it is the 1st time it has been done. .. . If bobby did it? [I'm curious about this] At some point as much as I disliked MJ I have to say he was a great player at some pt. . . people are going to have to admit that Tiger is on pace to lap Arnold, Jack Nic and even the untouchable Bobby [who never had to compete against the WHOLE field . . back then it was VERY Exclusive] Rocket River ------------------
Because two of Bobbys were AMATEURS. A Grand Sham indeed! ------------------ Whatever you want to do, you have to do something else first.
The Grand Slam used to consist of the US Amateur, US Open, British Amateur and British Open. The PGA was also considered a major back in his day, but Jones did not play in it the year he won the original "Grand Slam". By popular definition, Wood's accomplishment is not a true grand slam, but it is a remarkable achievement especially with the number of quality golfers that exist today. The same question came up in tennis a few years ago. It was one of the women (Hingis?), who (I think) won the last 2 majors of one year and the first major of the next year. She lost the next one so the point became moot (not mute as many people like to say). ------------------
how is it 'dumbed' down from what I understand they did not play ANYWHERE NEAR as many tourney's back in Bobby's day It's dumbed down, because until a few weeks ago, the Grand Slam was the 4 major tournaments in ONE CALENDER YEAR. This was never an issue. Now that someone might do some other achievement, people wanted to redefine it just so we can say someone won a Grand Slam. Tiger wanted to redefine it so he could say he won the Grand Slam. Call it something else, but it's not the Grand Slam. You don't change the definition of a title so that someone's accomplishment fits it. ------------------ http://www.swirve.com ... more fun than a barrel full of monkeys and midgets. I maybe wrong but the fact that two of his tourneys were amatuers seems to make his feet just a lil suspect a little less glamour even if Tiger's is not a 'Grand Slam' Bobby's is even less so . . . It's like Shaq playing for LSU this year winning a NCAA CHampionship and a NBA champion ship in the same year Rocket River Just learning the politics of this thing we call golf ------------------
My perception is that of confidence. He appears to give the other golfers in the tournament respect by saying that we should keep are eye on Calcavecchia, on Duval, on Furyk or whomever. He can sometimes be very blunt, but I would say he has been no more confident than Jordan. Sometimes he does show his emotion, but if you compare it to basketball, he's rather tame. By the way, I'd consider it a grand slam. I really don't see why having 4 in one calendar year is any more of an accomplishment than winning four in a row. However, having said that, I bet he gets the slam anyway. In my eyes it would have been a slam. It doesn't matter much anyway. He knows what he accomplished. ------------------ humble, but hungry.
It's my understanding that when Bobby's Grand Slam was achieved, the status of the Amateur games was very different. They didn't allow people who played for money but all the best golfers then were the amateurs. As the sport was popularized, professionals replaced amateurs. (Of course, it is possible that I have the chronology shifted -- maybe the amateurs already sucked by the time he got that Grand Slam.) Otherwise, why call it a Grand Slam? Why not call it a Tiger? One, it should stroke his ego to have an achievement named after him and, two, it would recognize his achievement while maintaining the definition separate from a real Grand Slam. Three, his name lends itself very well to this application (a lot better than 'a Henry' or something). On hating Tiger Woods: the fact that he has the same basic ancestry as my wife is the only thing that keeps me from hating him. I don't like him because he is successful and I will defend my (and Ali's) right to hate any famous people without due cause unto death. What's the value in them being famous if we can't hate them? ------------------ RealGM Gafford Art Artisan Cakes
