The Phoenix Suns continue to position themselves to match an expected five-year, $70 million dollar offer sheet from the Atlanta Hawks for Joe Johnson.

On Wednesday the Suns agreed to send center Jake Voskuhl to the Charlotte Bobcats for a conditional second round pick, a Suns team souce said.

The move clears $1.875 million off the cap for Phoenix. Suns owner Robert Sarver has charged Suns managment with finding a way to match Johnson's offer without incurring the luxury tax next season.

According to the same Suns source, the team still intends to match any offer for Johnson.

This move combined with the new amnesty clause (Phoenix plans to ask for relief from Howard Eisley's contract) should do the trick.

What happens if they should lose Stephen Hunter now?

Why would Charlotte do this? Now half their roster is incapable of playing any position but 4/5!

Which half, the 4/5's? Actually, I like Jake. I think he's a rotation player behind a good 5.

That guy's a monster waiting to happen. 3.9 blocks per 40 minutes last year. Yikes.

That's the problem with projections. The guy is a rotation guy, but give me a steady 20-25 minutes and his numbers will level out. At best.

Hunter is bad - really, really bad. You don't get cut by the worst team in the league if you aren't.

So who is going to be a backup 5 in Phoenix? They deal Voskuhl. If they are trying to create space to sign Joe Johnson they are not going to extend themselves for Hunter. Who else is on their roster, Neal Walk?

If they keep making moves like this, their bench is going to be even worse than last years.

Totally, but he'll be averaging a block and a half for the 20 minutes he plays. That's tremendous.

And foodworld, I thought Hunter was the worst thing I'd ever seen at DePaul. Horrible player. But he's gotten a lot better.

I don't see how the amnesty clause will help them avoid the luxury tax threshold- wouldn't Eisley's salary still count against the cap? I understand that it would save them the amount of the contract in Ltax payments, but it shouldn't do jack about giving them cap room. Or am I wrong?

Phoenix still doesn't have a center and they still don't have a bench. And now their cap space is going to be screwed like crazy, especially with their attempts to stay under the luxury cap. Phoenix isn't going to have a season like last year. I like our chances at replacing them at the top if we can get Damon Stoudamire in the fold.

Bigs develop 'late' but I still see a modest career for SH, nothing special. Do you see more?

Does Phoenix have any bad contracts on their roster at all? Signing JJ and then if they can sign Stoudamire to the max. They may have the best complete starting 5, but i wonder how a whole CBA bench will do in the long run?

but they're not looking for cap room, that's long gone now.

they want just what you said, to avoid paying the LT. they want voshkul's and eisley's contract to no longer count toward LT calculations so they can add JJ's salary and can do that by trading jake and waiving eisley. they may have committed to pay $69M (for example) in salary next year w/ a resigned JJ, but if $7M of that is eisley and they drop off $2M with voshkul, then they won't have to pay the LT, assuming it's at $60M.

Nash, Johnson, Marion, & Stoudamire are going to cost them a fortune. They are going to be in cap hell for years. I wonder if they are still hoping to move Marion? I remember they were hoping to find a center in a deal for him last year. They are in trouble if they have one injury to any of those players right now.

I think of the Suns' management as the guy that drives a beat-up-barely-running car that has 22" rims on it, $2000 sound system, all the works. Sure he might have nice wheels, and his system is top notch, AND he gets to watch DVDs on his touchscreen head unit, but he's scrambling to make ends meet behind the scenes, got bills up the yin yang, and is pawning stuff left and right just to scrap up enough money to pay said bills. But it's okay, his wheels are BLANG BLANGIN!

The need to trade the Matrix. Though he's my boy on ESPN 2K5, lure away Nene at all costs when he becomes available to play center, and they should still have at least enough money for 1 good bench player. Then a couple good draft picks, didn't they get some highly talented international prospects from the Marbury trade? Those are always a toss up though.

I see the old Suns/Rockets rivarly coming back into play. Not to mention SA.
Nothing like the good old days-Utah coming back!
