local repsonse to the Caplan article--the Darwin Vindicated one: Prof draws fire on evolution Bret Hays The Daily Pennsylvanian Published Wednesday, February 28, 2001 Arthur Caplan is not one to shy away from controversy. The director of the Penn's Center for Bioethics has received intense criticism for a recent article he penned for MSNBC.com, arguing that the completed human genome proves Darwin's theory of evolution. The MSNBC.com article generated over 1,000 messages -- about 90 percent of which were critical -- but Caplan pointed out that a poll accompanying the article showed readers were almost evenly divided between supporters of and detractors from his thesis. "People feel threatened by these accounts," Caplan said. "They don't come on with quite the same response when someone outlines a foreign policy for Bosnia in 350 words." According to Caplan, only his earlier MSNBC.com pieces on abortion have prompted more e-mail responses. Caplan said he wrote the article because he was struck by the similarities between human DNA and that of other species, especially by the imperfect, "jerry-rigged" nature of some sequences. "Even though they're a mess, they're a mess in very similar ways," Caplan said. "You can track, in a very continuous manner... the pattern of change." Andrew Rennekamp, a College junior and a biology and anthropology major, criticized Caplan's article. "He says the proof is right there in our genes, but he doesn't say what the proof is," Rennekamp said. "His argument is very shallow." But Caplan explained that in the limited space for his article, he could not discuss all of the details of his argument. "For 400 words, you're not going to get it," he said. "You're never going to make the case." Much of Caplan's criticism comes from supporters of creationism, but Caplan sees science and religion as taking on completely different roles. "Organized religion doesn't impress me all the time, but I'm not anti-religious," Caplan said. "I'm hostile to the view that the biblical account is somehow scientific. People who argue for teaching creationism as science are disrespectful of religion." While Caplan expressed disappointment that some of his colleagues do not speak out in support of evolution, Center for Bioethics Associate Director Glenn McGee was not hesitant to offer his argument. "I believe creationism is fraudulent and frequently dangerous," McGee said. "I have been floored and a little bit frightened by the staggering number of angry, mindless creationists at our doorstep." Caplan is a professor of bioethics, molecular and cellular engineering and philosophy. He acted as an advisor to both Celera Genomics and the Human Genome Project, the two chief players in the competition to sequence the full human genome. http://www.dailypennsylvanian.com/NF/omf/penn/site_styles/penn/shell_story_news.html?rkey=0002367+sid=20010227233220.715FD+cat=news+template=story_without_photo.html ------------------
Hey nice find JayZ! I wonder if anyone who participated in this thread has been convinced either way. I doubt it! lol ------------------ "Relax... kids swallow quarters all the time. If she craps out two dimes and a nickel then start worrying!" -Grumpier Old Men
All that i would like to say is that if evolution was Correct (which it isnt) then there would be diffrent kinds of species romaing the earth. Have you ever heard of a Cross Between a Horse and a Donkey? It makes a Muel. The muel is infertiel. Meanning that it cannot have children with other donkeys or anything. Meaning that beacuse of that the whole earth would be unpopulated by anything beacuse the other species couldnt interbreed with the others sending a wipe out of all the life on this world. And Scientist have found that the human skin is made of 4 nucliodtieds, the exact 4 that come from clay in the dirt. God made us out of this dirt(clay) and the nucleotides have come with us ever since thus proving evolution wrong. And there are certian protiens in our bodie that con not be made unless with other protiens. If we didnt have all of the protiens in our body when God created us we would have died within the first day. Thus wipeing out our exsctance. But we havent Thus Proving Creation TOTALY CORRECT. have a nice day. ------------------

I thought we were all created on the back of a giant turtle in the middle of the ocean. maybe maybe no ------------------ Hanta-Force Paintball www.hanta-force.com
Sir Burtoon, I've read most of the arguments in this thread with interest but your takes the cake as the absolute WORST! You expample of the horse and the donkey proves nothing. Only the species that can breed together succesfully (horses OR mules) will survive. Just because cross breeding produces infertile creatures doesn't mean the purebreeds will die out. moestavern said: "Its all about FAITH , We dont know what is out there , We arent supposed to know , Faith is the key...." Ignorance is bliss huh? Humankind's ever burning desire to learn more is what makes us prosper. I DO want to know. ------------------ ..as a man danced so the drums were beaten for him. I fully Agree with the Faith Part in taking faith in Creation, but we dont totaly need all faith to agree in Creation, everything we see in nature proves Creation. And about the Purebreeds the will not die out, but part of them changing will die out beacuse they would be infertile with the other species that they came from. Example. The repitle starts to evolve into a bird. at its 1/2 way stage they would have to reproduce with something to keep it still going. But they are of diffrent species now and it is the only 1/2 bird and 1/2 reptile so it iwll try to breed with the reptile and they would make an infertile offsrping. That proves that Evolution could not have occured or basilcly we would all be amobeas swimming around in the water. ------------------
No. It only begs the question "Creationism or Evolutionism?" otherwise this thread wouldn't exist if the truth were so self-evident. If you're talking about the evolution of reptiles into birds via theories about creatures such as Archaeopteryx, I think the current belief is that Archaeopteryx isn't the missing link between reptiles and birds. I'm sure somebody here has better knowledge on the subject than I do, but that's the last I heard... ------------------ "So you say you want some intelligent responses? yup. im just floating on my turtle and i get the little otter to swim down all the way to the bottom. he swims ans swims, but the pressure is too much for him. moments later the little sea otter floats to the surface next to my turtle dead. but clutched in the hands of the little otter is a small scoup of mud. Man i thought this was the best evolutuion story. its not just Mayan, infact many native peoples belived it. which to me means that it is a story which originated in what is now Manchurian chins(the origin of native people in N, and S America) over 10,000 years old. pretty cool if ya ask me. did ya ask me?? well if ya did, ITS COOL! ------------------ Hanta-Force Paintball www.hanta-force.com
Hey Sir Buffoon Did you even read anything in this thread? Have you ever taken a class outside of your church? Open your eyes or go back to Kansas. At least the other people in this thread were will to consider the possibility of evolution. How do you explain all of the skeletal material found? How do you explain fossils? Did aliens put them there? Next time get some education before you try to argue a point. ------------------ Poopy! And, yes, I have a boyfriend. Five papers and counting! wahoo!
Wow...did you know that the turtle thing is part of Maya superstition/religion or is that just a coincidence? They also beleive the world is going to end sometime in December 2012 (theres an exact date but I cant remember). ------------------
LOL! That's what he was referring to. Several of the ancient "creation-then-destruction" stories have us riding on something until the Great Flood receded. This is much like Noah's Ark. The story of the Great Flood is prevalent in many world religions especially among Native Americans/Central American/South American Indians. ------------------ "So you say you want some intelligent responses? Have you ever heard of survival of the fittest? Obviously there are no "half-breeds" because they could not compete with todays man. This is why evolution takes place! For the love of G-d, keep doubting and doubting.. thats fine with me, but don't make an argument when you know nothing. Maybe we aren't supposed to take everything literally(in the bible/torah, whatever you read). Anyways we have documented men back tens of thousands of years (neolithic men). Obviously you havent hit college yet. ------------------ BILL KENNEDY SUCKS!
