Now that it appears as though New Jersey (i) will be getting Shareef and (ii) will be losing out on the ridiculous "Keyon Dooling Sweepstakes" to the Orlando Magic, it looks as though the Nets are still in need of a combo guard to spell Jason Kidd. Well, the Rockets have two combo guards in David Wesley and Bobby Sura.

If the Rockets can somehow get Damon Stoudamire, I'm wondering if they could trade either Wesley or Sura to the Nets for Eric Williams. I'm not sure whether the contracts work (teams can always add filler, etc.), but Williams would be a perfect addition to the roster. He is an excellent defender and can stick the open jumper (although he's not considered much of a shooter). Also, the Nets probably have little need for him with the return of Jefferson and the signing of Shareef.

While I really like both Wesley and Sura, I think the current glut in the Rockets' backcourt has to be resolved somehow. Also, the team really does need a legit backup at the small forward position. Williams can play the 3 when T-Mac is resting or for stretches when/if T-Mac plays some 2. Also, Williams has the ability to slide over and play the PF position for stretches. A Rockets "small-ball" frontcourt of T-Mac, Williams and Swift would be perfect.

    Any thoughts?

Eric Williams plays for the Raptors, was traded there in the Vince Carter trade.

I would love Eric Williams, and he's on the outs with Toronto, and they want to get rid of him. I've had him on my off-season wish list for awhile now. If we could get him for expiring contracts and a 2nd pic, I'd do that in a heart beat. He'd give us depth, and is a defensive animal. Perfect fit for our team.

Agreed. Eric Williams would be a nice fit on the Rockets. Williams can even play some backup PF in smaller lineups (think against Marion/Dirk).

Williams is VERY unhappy in Toronto, but I think his contract expires after the end of this season. So I doubt you could get him with an expiring contract since Williams himself is expiring. Maybe Toronto moves him just to get rid of a headache and for a 2nd round pick.

If there is any truth to the Howard for Stoudamire rumor, Eric Williams would make an excellent backup for Swift, as well as Mcgrady. He's the type of player that I think would instantly become one of Van Gundy's favorite players.

Man, I feel stupid. I'm usually up this stuff. For some reason, I thought the Nets GOT Williams in the Carter trade. My bad.

Where did anyone hear something about a Howard-for-Stoudamire S&T???

It was on HoopsWorld, so who knows. I'm guessing there is no validity to it at all, because the thread about it has magically disappeared.

I guess a Trade with the Raptors for E. Williams and MoPete would fill the roster out nicely if CD could facilitate this. I suspect it won't happen until trade deadline when the Raptors suck again this year.

    E. Williams is high on my potential backup swingman list as well. I'd love to get Mo Pete, but Toronto is rather short on swingmen, so I doubt they'd let Mo Pete go unless we were willing to take on a bad contract like Rose or Alston.
